Cover Flap In the winter of 1642/43, while King Charles was hiding in Oxford, his wife Henrietta was in The Hague pawning the English crown jewels, buying an army, and chartering ships to invade England. Two of the leading Reformers, Admiral Rich and Colonel Waller, moved quickly to secure all of the ports along the south coast. Denied the south coast, the invasion convoy sailed up the North Sea coast. They were first spotted off the coast of Lowestoft by the crew of a small patrol ship. The crew included Daniel Vanderus, his clansmen, and a dragoon captain named Robert Blake. About the Author Skye Smith is my pen name. In 1630 some of my Manchester Puritan ancestors sailed away to Massachus...

What is Global Engineering Education For? The Making of International Educators, Part I & II

Global engineering offers the seductive image of engineers figuring out how to optimize work through collaboration and mobility. Its biggest challenge to engineers, however, is more fundamental and difficult: to better understand what they know and value qua engineers and why. This volume reports an experimental effort to help sixteen engineering educators produce ""personal geographies"" describing what led them to make risky career commitments to international and global engineering education. The contents of their diverse trajectories stand out in extending far beyond the narrower image of producing globally-competent engineers. Their personal geographies repeatedly highlight experiences ...

The continued loss of rail network infrastructure and rail service throughout the US has most instances resulted in the modal shift of rail freight back to truck. Rail freight converted to truck may have significant impact on pavement maintenance costs and activities due to the increased highway traffic volumes. This study will investigate three short-line rail routes in Minnesota, Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and will determine the potential impacts of diverting rail freight flows to truck. A logistics flow routing will be created illustrating the new truck flows by highway classification and usage. The targeted highways current conditions and asset management techniques will be documented. A pavement maintenance model will be used to determine the incremental pavement maintenance cost per ton-mile if additional freight moved over various classes of highway and their impact on highway funding.
