Chinese Migration to Europe
Through an analysis of Chinese migration to Europe, this volume examines the most pressing migration and integration issues facing many societies today, from the political and policy-based challenges of managing increasingly diverse communities, to individual lived experiences of identity and belonging. In addition to chapters on the UK, France and Italy, the book spotlights one of the most extraordinary examples of Chinese migration to Europe: that provided by the city of Prato, just 20km from Florence in Tuscany, Italy. Renowned for its historic textile industry, Prato is now home to one of the largest populations of Chinese residents in Europe, a phenomenon that is remarkable not only for its magnitude but also for the speed with which it has developed. This edited collection, which brings together twenty-seven separate contributors, deepens our understanding of the case of Prato within the context of Chinese migration to the new Europe.
Virginio Gayda, the Yugoslav Question and the Italian Irredenta
This is a study of the early writings of Virginio Gayda (1885-1944), a talented but amoral Italian journalist whose career spanned two world wars. A keen observer, prolific writer and propagandist during his stint as the newspaper La Stampa’s special correspondent in Habsburg Vienna, Gayda lent his considerable skills to promote an aggressive foreign policy. No one did more than he to poison relations between the Italian and Yugoslav peoples. His is the story of a respected journalist who chose an ultranationalist path to fascism and international fame. Not uninfluenced by rank careerism and material reward he forsook his roots to embrace the antisemitic “race” laws of 1938 and Italy’s disastrous partnership with Nazi Germany.

This collection gathers the contributions of ten scholars on the topic of transnational cultural and physical mobility originating in China. These contributions aim to open conversations among Chinese Studies scholars by applying a Mobility Studies perspective. Exploring diverse narratives and forms of representation from people of Chinese heritage, the book is divided into three parts that each look closely at the relationship between movement and cultural production. The first part is dedicated to four types of mobility of people from China to Italy, namely tourist mobility (Miriam Castorina), labor mobility (Valentina Pedone), student mobility (Xu Hao), and mobility of social elites (Andrea Scibetta). The second part is dedicated to examples of reverse mobility from Italy to China (Gao Changxu, Chiara Lepri, Giuseppe Rizzuto). The third part focuses on case studies based on mobilities from China to territories other than Italy (Rebecca Ehrenwirth, Martina Renata Prosperi, Giulia Rampolla).

Languages of Discrimination and Racism in Twentieth-Century Italy
This volume represents one of the first extensive studies that investigates the persistence of questions of race and racism in Italy from the liberal age to the present, through colonialism, Fascism and post-war Italy. It adopts an interdisciplinary perspective to investigate the intertwining of the cultural, social, legislative and political dynamics of discrimination in Italy’s past and present. Gli scritti raccolti in questo terzo Quaderno del CERM nascono dal desiderio di promuovere un'occasione di studio sulla cittadinanza, sollecitata dall'esigenza di mettere a confronto due diverse prospettive, quella sociologica e quella giuridica. I cultori delle due materie, da tempo, concentrano la propria attenzione sul tema utilizzando le "proprie" categorie. Ciò costituisce un indubbio fattore di arricchimento, evidenziando le potenzialità di un approccio interdisciplinare, ma, sul piano del metodo, implica anche un dialogo costante, che permetta di valorizzare il contributo di ciascun sapere scientifico ed eviti, anche sul piano terminologico, incomprensioni fuorvianti. Gli scritti di questo volume tentano di offrire un contributo a questo dialogo, nella consapevolezza che solo un adeguato supporto conoscitivo possa assicurare al decisore politico gli strumenti necessari per affrontare la sfida dell'integrazione dei migranti e promuovere il consolidamento di ordinamenti autenticamente multiculturali.
