In European Small States and the Role of Consuls in the Age of Empire Aryo Makko argues that Sweden and Norway participated in the New Imperialism in the late 18th and early 19th centuries through consular services. Usually portrayed as nations without an imperial past, Makko demonstrates that their role in the processes of imperialism and colonialism during that period can be understood by including consular affairs and practices of informal imperialism into the analysis. With this, he contributes to our understanding of the role of smaller states in the so-called Age of Empire. Aryo Makko, Ph.D. (2012), Stockholm University, is Associate Professor of History at that university and a Pro Futura Scientia Fellow at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (SCAS). He is also a member of the Young Academy of Sweden.

Napoleon

'Vibrant and illuminating ... [Dywer] tells a fascinating tale' The Times 'Refreshing scholarship ... Energetic, readable and filled with colourful detail ... Napoleon: Passion, Death and Resurrection is a thoroughly enjoyable book which divides well the reality of exile from the legend that sprang from it' Literary Review This meticulously researched study opens with Napoleon no longer in power, but instead a prisoner on the island of St Helena. This may have been a great fall from power, but Napoleon still held immense attraction. Every day, huge crowds would gather on the far shore in the hope of catching a glimpse of him. Philip Dwyer closes his ambitious trilogy exploring Napoleon's life, legacy and myth by moving from those first months of imprisonment, through the years of exile, up to death and then beyond, examining how the foundations of legend that had been laid by Napoleon during his lifetime continued to be built upon by his followers. This is a fitting and authoritative end to a definitive work.

A decade ago when this small handbook was first suggested I was still travelling extensively on business as well as hosting my own business radio show based in the UK. Smallman on Business. As I talked to guests on the show and other business folks whilst travelling I realized that people were interested in the stories and thoughts I had gathered from working with folks around the World. As I'm I am not academic I have recorded those stories and thoughts in simple language and into this simple handbook. With space for readers to make their own comments and reminders. The stories and thoughts maybe obvious, but are often forgotten, or they express a known idea in a different way that could be more relevant to your current situation.Every reader won't get something out of each and every one of the stories or thoughts, but I do believe that everyone will find something here which resonates and that can be put to good effect in your business as you to travel on Life's Highway.
