Photography Performing Humor
New perspectives on humor within photography Despite the ubiquitous presence of photographic humor in art and popular media, the phenomenon has as yet received very little scholarly attention. Focusing on staged humor rather than on comic effects of snapshot photography, this volume brings together leading scholars in the field addressing humor performed in front of the camera, often specifically created for the camera, and the performative joke-work done by the medium itself. A first section explores how photography, due to its “shattering” qualities, turns into a privileged medium for eliciting humorous effects and how humor can be discerned within the photographic event. A second section discusses the toolbox of photographic trickery (photomontage, double exposure and cinematic movement) that allows photography to mock itself. Het opzet van deze publicatie is meervoudig. In de eerste plaats gaat historicus David Vermeiren na hoe Guy Vandenbranden een sleutelrol innam binnen de naoorlogse Belgische avant-garde en hoe hij aan het eind van de jaren vijftig aansluiting vond bij een internationale kunstscène. Zo leerde hij onder meer Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni, Yves Klein en François Morellet persoonlijk kennen. Vandenbranden bleek bijzonder goed op de hoogte van het internationale kunstgebeuren, maar was geen navolger. Hij ontwikkelde een persoonlijke stijl en bleef, ondanks een frontale aanval van het nouveau réalisme op de abstracte kunst, trouw aan zijn principes.0De studie omvat de periode 1950-1985, gaande van Vandenbrandens vorming tot zijn artistieke volwassenwording, met speciale aandacht voor zijn rol binnen de kunstenaarsgroepen Art abstrait, Formes, Nieuwe Vlaamse school, VECU en het Internationaal studiecentrum voor constructieve kunst.

Callewaert Vanlangendonck Gallery releases a new book about the painter Serge Vandercam (1924-2005), ?Nuclear Times. 1953-1963?. In 1957 Serge Vandercam and Piero Manzoni joined Arte Nucleare, the Italian avant-garde movement of Enrico Baj and Sergio Dangelo. It is only one of the highlights of Vandercam?s informal period, situated between 1953 and 1963.
