This edited, multi-author book gathers selected, peer-reviewed contributions based on papers presented at the 23rd International Workshop on Quantum Systems in Chemistry, Physics, and Biology (QSCP-XXIII), held in Mopani Camp, The Kruger National Park, South Africa, in September 2018. The content is primarily intended for scholars, researchers, and graduate students working at universities and scientific institutes who are interested in the structure, properties, dynamics, and spectroscopy of atoms, molecules, biological systems, and condensed matter.
Density Functional Theory (DFT) is a powerful technique for calculating and comprehending the molecular and electrical structure of atoms, molecules, clusters, and solids. Its use is based not only on the capacity to calculate the molecular characteristics of the species of interest but also on the provision of interesting concepts that aid in a better understanding of the chemical reactivity of the systems under study. This book presents examples of recent advances, new perspectives, and applications of DFT for the understanding of chemical reactivity through descriptors forming the basis of Conceptual DFT as well as the application of the theory and its related computational procedures in the determination of the molecular properties of different systems of academic, social, and industrial interest.
Atomic-Scale Modelling of Electrochemical Systems A comprehensive overview of atomistic computational electrochemistry, discussing methods, implementation, and state-of-the-art applications in the field The first book to review state-of-the-art computational and theoretical methods for modelling, understanding, and predicting the properties of electrochemical interfaces. This book presents a detailed description of the current methods, their background, limitations, and use for addressing the electrochemical interface and reactions. It also highlights several applications in electrocatalysis and electrochemistry. Atomic-Scale Modelling of Electrochemical Systems discusses different ways of i...
Due to efficacy and optimization potential of genetic and evolutionary algorithms, they are used in learning and modeling especially with the advent of big data related problems. This book presents the algorithms and strategies specifically associated with pertinent issues in materials science domain. It discusses the procedures for evolutionary multi-objective optimization of objective functions created through these procedures and introduces available codes. Recent applications ranging from primary metal production to materials design are covered. It also describes hybrid modeling strategy, and other common modeling and simulation strategies like molecular dynamics, cellular automata etc. ...
A unique and timely book providing an overview of both the methodologies and applications of computational materials design.
This book explores the synthesis, characterization, and applications of graphene and its derivatives. It covers advancements in improving graphene quality, surface engineering methods, and increasing material functionality. The topics covered include functionalized graphene, graphene quantum dots, novel device fabrication approaches, and diverse applications. The book also investigates the fundamental principles of characterizing graphene and its derivatives, along with electronic structures, theoretical investigations, and computational analyses relevant to their applications, synthesis, and properties. The chapters are organized to cover these topics, starting with a general overview of surface chemistry and its concepts for surface engineering of graphene, the fundamental properties of graphene and its derivatives, their synthesis, and applications in numerous fields, and concludes with a future perspective. Significantly, for the first time, both industrial and medical applications are gathered in one book, enabling us to discuss the confrontation of medical and industrial applications of graphene and graphene quantum dots.
Berry phase has been widely used in condensed matter physics in the past two decades. This volume is a timely collection of essential papers in this important field, which is highlighted by 2016 Nobel Prize in physics and recent exciting developments in topological matters. Each chapter has an introduction, which helps readers to understand the reprints that follow.
This book addresses to the materials scientists, physicists, chemists, biologists, and electrical engineers engaged in fundamental and applied research or technical investigations on such materials. The goal of the International Symposium on Dielectric Materials and Applications conference series is to provide an innovative platform for key researchers, scientists from all over the world to exchange ideas and to hold wide ranging discussions on recent developments in dielectric materials and their new and emerging applications. The aim of ISyDMA meeting is to provide an international forum for the discussion of current research on high k-dielectric, electrical insulation, dielectric phenomena, and topics related to emerging applications.
Plant gene transfer achieved in the early ‘80s paved the way for the exploitation of the potential of gene engineering to add novel agronomic traits and/or to design plants as factories for high added value molecules. For this latter area of research, the term "Molecular Farming" was coined in reference to agricultural applications in that major crops like maize and tobacco were originally used basically for pharma applications. The concept of the “green biofactory” implies different advantages over the typical cell factories based on animal cell or microbial cultures already when considering the investment and managing costs of fermenters. Although yield, stability, and quality of the...
This book presents and discusses recent developments in the broad field of spectroscopy, providing the reader with an updated overview. The main objective is to introduce them to recent innovations and current trends in spectroscopy applied to molecules and materials. The book also brings together experimentalists and theoreticians to highlight the multidimensional aspects of spectroscopy and discuss the latest issues. Accordingly, it provides insights not only into the general goals of spectroscopy, but also into how the various spectroscopic techniques represent a toolbox that can be used to gain a more detailed understanding of molecular systems and complex chemical problems. Besides tech...
