Recent Advances in γδ T Cell Biology: New Ligands, New Functions, and New Translational Perspectives

Gamma/delta (γδ) T-cells are a small subset of T-lymphocytes in the peripheral circulation but constitute a major T-cell population at other anatomical localizations such as the epithelial tissues. In contrast to conventional α/β T-cells, the available number of germline genes coding for T-cell receptor (TCR) variable elements of γδ T-cells is very small. Moreover, there is a prefential localization of γδ T-cells expressing given Vgamma and Vdelta genes in certain tissues. In humans, γδ T-cells expressing the Vg9Vd2-encoded TCR account for anywhere between 50 and >95% of peripheral blood γδ T-cells, whereas cells expressing non-Vd2 genes dominate in mucosal tissues. In mice, ther...

Advances in Brain Vascular Research

The brain vasculature nurtures and regulates basic functions of the central nervous system (CNS), acting as a barrier against pathogens. This book provides in-depth and focused data on the characteristics, function and role of brain blood vessels in health and disease. It addresses topics such as vascular activity, cell-cell communication, and the role of the endothelium in the development of the most prevalent types of cerebrovascular disease, neurodegenerative disorders, cognitive impairment, and vascular abnormalities. It offers an updated view of the current state of microvascular biology and research, and thus supports the discovery of new therapeutic agents and procedures directed at several CNS disorders.

IMUNOLOGI DASAR

There are more T cells in the gastrointestinal tract and lung than in the rest of the body combined. The aim of this book is to cover all the important aspects of the biology of these cells in animals and in man. Basic observations are described as well as disease states where aberrant activation of mucosal T cells causes tissue damage. The continuing discovery of features of mucosal T cells which make them different from T cells in the periphery is a consistent theme throughout the text. Topics discussed include new developments in understanding why the characteristic response of mucosal T cells to soluble antigens is tolerance, the role of the gut epithelium in intestinal immunity, the mol...
