This book aims to provide non-specialist healthcare practitioners with current, focused and objective information on the most common vascular diseases encountered in daily clinical practice. In day-to-day clinical practice many healthcare practitioners do not have a working knowledge of the most common vascular diseases that frequently arise in patient care. Some of these topics include: aneurysms, peripheral arterial disease, diabetic foot, venous thromboembolism, cerebrovascular disease, aortic dissection, and acute limb ischemia. These commonly encountered vascular diseases are becoming public health issues due to their high morbidity and mortality as well as increasing healthcare costs. Since patients with vascular diseases are often referred to non-specialists, the general practitioner must know how to proper handle the most common vascular diseases encountered in daily clinical practice. For each disease the concept, epidemiology, natural history, diagnosis and treatment are described, followed by essential advice on what the non-specialist can do for the patient and when to refer the patient to a specialist.

Clinical Cases in Exfoliative Dermatitis

Clinical cases are a key component in modern medical education, assisting the trainee or recertifying clinician to work through unusual cases using best practice techniques. Exfoliative dermatitis, also known as "red man", is an important discipline in this regard since it is a highly visual subject requiring the reader to describe often very subtle differences in the presentation of patients and define accurately the diagnostic and management criteria to base their clinical decision-making on. Clinical Cases in Exfoliative Dermatitis highlights evidence-based best practice through a multidisciplinary approach that is relevant to dermatologists, as well as pharmacologists and pathologists.

Dangerous Liaisons

The relationship between criminal syndicates and politicians has a long history, including episodes even from the earliest years of America’s colonies. But while organized crime may not get the headlines it once did in North America, the resurgence of such criminal activity in Latin America, and in some European nations, has grabbed the public’s attention. In Dangerous Liaisons noted scholars describe and analyze the role of organized crime in the financing of politics in selected democracies in Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Mexico) and in Europe (Bulgaria and Italy). The book seeks to unravel the myths that have developed around crime in these locales, whil...

EU-Food Information Regulation 1169/2011

  • Categories: Law

The EU Food Information Regulation 1169/2011 (FIR) harmonizes European food information law to a full and comprehensive degree, covering nearly all aspects of commercial communication about food. However, in the name of subsidiarity, and in the interest of SMEs, the FIR leaves some areas for the national regulator to decide upon. This mainly concerns the labelling requirements of non-prepacked foods but also specific types or categories of foods, as well as a selected number of pre-packed foods. Member States have enacted laws, or are preparing to do so, to provide the necessary regulation for food markets within their jurisdiction. The decisions they have made in shaping their laws, and the balance they have struck between consumer information and the food business operators’ desire for flexibility, are the focus of this book. Specialized lawyers of the Food Lawyers’ Network have pooled their knowledge in this volume to provide an account of the measures taken, showing the level of discretion national regulators retain in the area of food information, within what is a highly integrated regulatory environment of the European Union.

Democratic Brazil Revisited

Brazil presents a compelling example of twenty-first century democracy in action. In this sequel to their landmark study Democratic Brazil, editors Peter Kingstone and Timothy J. Power have assembled a distinguished group of U.S.- and Brazilian-based scholars to assess the impact of competitive politics on Brazilian government, institutions, economics, and society. The 2002 election of Lula da Silva and his Worker's Party promised a radical shift toward progressive reform, transparency, and accountability, opposing the earlier centrist and market-oriented policies of the Cardoso government. But despite the popular support reflected in his 2006 reelection, many observers claim that Lula and h...
