Deeper Learning in Leadership
Deeper Learning in Leadership is a resource that is designed to show how leadership potential can be both broadened and deepened in our colleges and universities. Author Dennis Roberts proposes a new approach to learning about leadership development in higher education that recognizes innovative strategies are needed for the increasingly complex issues we face, both in higher education and in the broader landscape beyond the campus. He advocates that fostering deeper leadership will require educators to take a critical look at the organizational models and processes that characterize most contemporary colleges and universities. This book is dedicated to my wife, Marion W. Routh. In her way, she has been informally involved in clinica! psychology organizations for as many years as I have. She has also served for many years as the first reader of almost all manuscripts I ha ve written, including the one for this book. I can always depend on her to tell me straight out what she thinks. When she found out I was writing this book, she was afraid that the mass of detailed factual information I was gathering would be dull to read. Therefore, when I actually started writing, I laid aside all notes and just told the story in a way that flowed as freely as possible. {1 went back later to fill in the documentation and to correct factual errors that had crept in. ) When she looked over the first draft of the book, her comment was, "It is not as boring asI thought it would be. " Her frankness is so dependable that I knew from these words that there was hope, but that I had my work cut out forme in the revision process. By the middle of the second draft, she grudgingly had to admit that she was getting hooked on the book and kept asking where the next chapter was.

The Role of Leadership Educators
Leadership, as a discipline, leadership education, as a field, and leadership educator, as a profession are still in their infancy and rapidly evolving. As professionals in higher education, we are constantly asked to provide opportunities for students to learn leadership, whether that is inside or outside of the classroom. However, very little, if any professional development occurs in how to create such learning opportunities. This book provides resources for leadership educators in three sections. The first section sets the stage for leadership education and the professional work of leadership educators, culminating with a variety of professional development resources for leadership educators. The second section introduces a leadership learning framework, provides characteristics and examples of strong leadership programs and assessment practices, and describes the transformative practice of leadership education.
