Some cope better than others with the new surroundings and the attempts by a well-meaning psychiatrist to help them, but all are vulnerable to some degree. Not one feels totally content with life at the Institute. The story traces the treatment of the six men, shedding a particularly bright light on the character of Calvin Butler, the eldest son of the Butler family in The Class of '52. Although Calvin still imagines that his dead brother speaks to him in dreams, he appears almost normal compared to the other residents of the facility. The story unexpectedly turns when Calvin takes matters into his own hands, seeking answers to questions that the Institute can't resolve. He maps a new course of action in his search for happiness.
