Conversations with John Fowles

Although best known for his novels The Collector, The Magus, and The French Lieutenant's Woman, John Fowles is also a short story writer, a poet, a respected translator, and a prolific essayist. A Smile in His Mind's Eye

Durrell's best-known work fused Western notions of time and space with Eastern metaphysics. Very little has been written about Durrell's work before the Second World War. With A Smile in His Mind's Eye, Ray Morrison seeks to redress this neglect.

Turning Points

At times of crisis and revolution such as ours, diagnoses of crucial junctures and ruptures – ‘turning points’ – in the continuous flow of history are more prevalent than ever. Analysing literary, cinematic and other narratives, the volume seeks to understand the meanings conveyed by different concepts of turning points, the alternative concepts to which they are opposed when used to explain historical change, and those contexts in which they are unmasked as false and over-simplifying constructions. Literature and film in particular stress the importance of turning points as a sensemaking device (as part of a character’s or a community’s cultural memory), while at the same time unfolding the constructive and hence relative character of turning points. Offering complex reflections on the notion of turning points, literary and filmic narratives are thus of particular interest to the present volume.

Recollecting John Fowles / Wiedererinnerungen an John Fowles

More than a decade after his death in 2005, this collection of essays celebrates the memory of John Fowles, one of the champions of early postmodernist literature in England. As the first publication of the German John Fowles Society, founded in 2015, the book brings together a collector, a translator and a handful of scholars who pay tribute to one of the most important voices in English fiction after World War II. Their contributions, which address The Magus, The French Lieutenant's Woman, The Ebony Tower, Daniel Martin and the unpublished Tesserae, bear testimony to Fowles's lasting fascination. Mehr als ein Jahrzehnt nach seinem Tod im Jahr 2005 erfährt die Erinnerung an John Fowles, ei...

This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2015. The topic of deception is an area of study that has fascinated researchers and readers alike for generations. From infamous tales of espionage and conspiracy, to the targeted deception of illusionists and magicians, and notorious examples of deceptive statements and actions in public life, the concept of deception is widely recognised by the general public. The pervasive nature of deception and deceit, permeating all facets of life from the annals of history to the present day, means that it is an area of research that benefits substantially from an approach that crosses conventional academic and research boundaries. This collection represents an interdisciplinary exploration of the concept of deception, expanding the readers’ awareness and understanding of a range of areas including the portrayal of deception in literature and spy fiction, the existence and success of literary hoaxes, deception and illusion in visual art, and the use of deception in both strategic and interpersonal contexts.

Best known as the author of The French Lieutenant's Woman and The Magus, John Fowles achieved both critical and popular success as a writer of profound and provocative fiction. In this innovative new study, Brooke Lenz reconsiders Fowles' controversial contributions to feminist thought. Combining literary criticism and feminist standpoint theory, John Fowles: Visionary and Voyeur examines the problems that women readers and feminist critics encounter in Fowles' frequently voyeuristic fiction. Over the course of his career, this book argues, Fowles progressively created women characters who subvert voyeuristic exploitation and who author alternative narratives through which they can understan...
