A Year in the Life of Dr. Fox

During the years of Mexican President Calderone, drug cartels fought pitched battles against other cartels, the police, the army, and the good citizens of Mexico. Kidnappings, murder, threats, and intimidation by drug cartels impinged on every facet of Mexican life. This story of the de la Vega family in Culiacan, the state capital of the Mexican state of Sinaloa, tells of their struggles with the death of their beloved sister and the courageous brothers who become a force exacting revenge on the Pacific cartel. The family ancestors moved away from Southern California during the 1840’s as the influx of white settlers changed the culture and created certain discriminations against Mexican-A...

The Marginalized in Death

This volume bridges the gap between forensic and cultural anthropology in how both disciplines describe and theorize the dead, highlighting the potential for interdisciplinary scholarship. As applied disciplines dealing with some of the most marginalized people in our society, forensic anthropologists have the potential to shed light on important and persistent social issues that we face today. Forensic anthropologists have successfully pursued research agendas primarily focused on the development of individual biological profiles, time since death, recovery, and identification. Few, however, have taken a step back from their lab bench to consider how and why people become forensic cases or ...

This Open Access book is an excellent synthesis of the initial and continuing preparation for Mathematics Teaching in Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic and Venezuela, from which comparative analyses can be made that show similarities and differences, and highlight various perspectives. In August 2012, a workshop of the Capacity and Networking Project (CANP) of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) was held in Costa Rica. This CANP brought together for two weeks a group of 66 Mathematics educators, mathematicians, university administrators, and elementary and secondary teachers from Colombia, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Panamá and Costa Rica. The goal ...

Numerical Methods and Advanced Simulation in Biomechanics and Biological Processes

Numerical Methods and Advanced Simulation in Biomechanics and Biological Processes covers new and exciting modeling methods to help bioengineers tackle problems for which the Finite Element Method is not appropriate. The book covers a wide range of important subjects in the field of numerical methods applied to biomechanics, including bone biomechanics, tissue and cell mechanics, 3D printing, computer assisted surgery and fluid dynamics. Modeling strategies, technology and approaches are continuously evolving as the knowledge of biological processes increases. Both theory and applications are covered, making this an ideal book for researchers, students and R&D professionals. - Provides non-conventional analysis methods for modeling - Covers the Discrete Element Method (DEM), Particle Methods (PM), MessLess and MeshFree Methods (MLMF), Agent-Based Methods (ABM), Lattice-Boltzmann Methods (LBM) and Boundary Integral Methods (BIM) - Includes contributions from several world renowned experts in their fields - Compares pros and cons of each method to help you decide which method is most applicable to solving specific problems

Experimental design for habitat and nature tourism

In the realm of universities, the future is directly linked to the ability to connect local realities with the knowledge generated by researchers from other parts of the world. The experiences developed by the Lasallian Laboratory for Colombian Habitat Construction (LAB-LAHC) and teams of faculty and students from the Technische Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe in Germany are presented as precedents. These experiences have allowed this research, to analyse, diagnose, and propose alternatives for rural habitat and nature tourism. The goal is to create solutions promoting well-being and enjoying environments that protect biodiversity. Through exercises and dialogues, we have recognized our realities and those of other contexts, expanded discussions, set new challenges, and strengthened bonds of friendship. These findings are presented reflectively and expositorily in this book.
