Revenge

She deceived us all, but I still crave for her to be mine. Every waking moment that I’ve been part of the Skulls Renegade MC I could tell she was holding back something. What I didn’t realize is how much she was. Jenna isn’t the woman that any of us thought her to be. She’s a completely fabricated lie. I shouldn’t want her because of the deception she brought upon us. Her and I are both so similar, two people who have been through the darkest life has had to offer. But our pasts didn’t break us, they fueled us. Now I know her secrets, and I don’t know what I’ll do with them.

Bobbi caught a glimpse of the car, saw the blood splashed across the front seats, and felt the nausea rise up. It should have been her who was working last night, not Harriet. It should have been her. When a social worker is brutally murdered, Detectives Mike Nelson and Lena Overton are straight on the scene. But with a long list of potential suspects, can they work out who’s next before the killer strikes again? It’s Lake Haven’s first murder in eighteen years, and the community is terrified – especially Bobbi, who was not only supposed to be on duty that night, but also has the same long dark hair as Harriet and drives the same blue car. Now Bobbi lives in constant fear that the mu...

EMDE Central Bank Interventions During COVID-19 to Support Market Functioning

This paper examines emerging market and developing economy (EMDE) central bank interventions to maintain financial stability during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through empirical analysis and case study reviews, it identifies lessons for designing future programs to address challenges faced in EMDEs, including less-developed financial markets and lower levels of institutional credibility. The focus is on the functioning of the financial markets that are key to maintaining financial stability—money, securities, and FX funding markets. Several lessons emerge, including: (i) objectives should be well-specified and communicated to facilitate eventual exit; (ii) intervention triggers should prioritiz...

Irreversibility and Dissipation in Microscopic Systems

After an insightful introductory part on recent developments in the thermodynamics of small systems, the author presents his contribution to a long-standing problem, namely the connection between irreversibility and dissipation. He develops a method based on recent results on fluctuation theorems that is able to estimate dissipation using only information acquired in a single, sufficiently long, trajectory of a stationary nonequilibrium process. This part ends with a remarkable application of the method to the analysis of biological data, in this case, the fluctuations of a hair bundle. The third part studies the energetics of systems that undergo symmetry breaking transitions. These theoretical ideas lead to, among other things, an experimental realization of a Szilard engine using manipulated colloids. This work has the potential for important applications ranging from the analysis of biological media to the design of novel artificial nano-machines.

Lemurian Pushback

Billionaire tech guru Angelo Zarathustra has surrendered to the will of capitalism and become the richest man alive. Now he wants the world to officially accept Capital as the one, true God and capitalism as the word of God. He unveils his vision at an annual gathering of the rich and powerful and gets one thousand other billionaires to swear a blood oath to accelerate capitalism, whatever the cost. He purchases a well-known British spiritual landmark, for a huge sum of money, and arranges to have it shipped to California, to consecrate capitalism as the new God. New-age pop star, Jeb, is drafted in to get the locals to agree to the deal. Jane, a penniless hippie, living in a caravan in a field of mud in Somerset, is contacted telepathically by a group of inter-dimensional lemurs, who tell her she must stop Angelo before it is too late. Lemurian Pushback is a roller-coaster of a comedy romp - an easy to read page-turner that pulls no punches. Devaraj Sandberg is a therapist, workshop leader and author. He lives in Istanbul.

Paganism and Its Discontents

Proponents of racist interpretations of pre-Christian Norse-Germanic spiritualities have claimed to be preserving “heritage,” while others belonging to the contemporary Heathen movements have moved to distance themselves from “volkish” thinking. Long-simmering just beneath the surface of American Paganism, racialized Heathenry was on full display in 2017 in Charlottesville, Virginia. The contributions to this volume delineate between two communities that are using shared symbolism for widely different purposes. The book will serve to broaden understanding of the narratives in play here, resulting in mitigation of the rising tide of hate and racialized identity.
