Various subcortical structures in the brain are thought to be important in genesis or propagation of seizures. Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) of these structures aims to influence these key “pacemaker” areas in the brain and is gaining increasing interest as a possible new surgical modality for treatment of patients with intractable epilepsy. Based on this background, this volume brings together the experience of the Zurich Epilepsy Surgery Center with stereotactic recordings and stimulations of various subcortical nuclei, with special reference to the Forel H fields, the thalamic nuclei and the periaqueductal gray matter. This volume also addresses the important issues of DC recording/polarisation and of biochemical measurement of excitatory and inhibitory transmitters released in the primary epileptogenic area during epileptic discharges. This book is destined to improve understanding of the involvement of subcortical structures in seizure genesis or propagation in a time when exhaustive invasive presurgical evaluation is diminishing because of the today’s availability of modern non-invasive imaging technique.
This book covers stereotactic principles as well as functional stereotaxis, covering the history and uses of the techniques, treatments for specific conditions, and future developments. Includes a DVD demonstrating surgical procedures.
As Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies rapidly progress, questions about the ethics of AI, in both the near-future and the long-term, become more pressing than ever. This volume features seventeen original essays by prominent AI scientists and philosophers and represents the state-of-the-art thinking in this fast-growing field. Organized into four sections, this volume explores the issues surrounding how to build ethics into machines; ethical issues in specific technologies, including self-driving cars, autonomous weapon systems, surveillance algorithms, and sex robots; the long term risks of superintelligence; and whether AI systems can be conscious or have rights. Though the use and practical applications of AI are growing exponentially, discussion of its ethical implications is still in its infancy. This volume provides an invaluable resource for thinking through the ethical issues surrounding AI today and for shaping the study and development of AI in the coming years.
Textbook of Epilepsy Surgery covers all of the latest advances in the surgical management of epilepsy. The book provides a better understanding of epileptogenic mechanisms in etiologically different types of epilepsy and explains neuronavigation systems. It discusses new neuroimaging techniques, new surgical strategies, and more aggressive surgical approaches in cases with catastrophic epilepsies. The contributors also analyze the improved statistics of surgical outcome in different epilepsy types. This definitive textbook is an invaluable reference for neurologists, neurosurgeons, epilepsy specialists, and those interested in epilepsy and its surgical treatment.
This volume in the 5-Minute Consult series focuses on neurological diseaes and disorders, as well as key symptoms, signs, and tests. Dozens of noted authorities provide tightly organized, practical guidance. Using the famous two-page layout and outline format of The 5-Minute Consult Series, the book provides instant access to clinically-oriented, must-have information on all disorders of the nervous system. Each disease is covered in a consistent, easy-to-follow format: basics (including signs and symptoms), diagnosis, treatment, medications, follow-up, and miscellaneous considerations (including diseases with similar characteristics, pregnancy, synonyms, and ICD coding).
The electrifying, forgotten history of Robert Heath's brain pacemaker, investigating the origins and ethics of one of today's most promising medical breakthroughs: deep brain stimulation The technology invented by psychiatrist Robert G. Heath in the 1950s and '60s has been described as among the most controversial experiments in US history. His work was alleged at the time to be part of MKUltra, the CIA's notorious "mind control" project. His research subjects included incarcerated convicts and gay men who wished to be "cured" of their sexual preference. Yet his cutting-edge research and legacy were quickly buried deep in Tulane University's archives. Investigative science journalist Lone Fr...
