Supermodularity and Complementarity

Supermodularity and Complementarity

The economics literature is replete with examples of monotone comparative statics; that is, scenarios where optimal decisions or equilibria in a parameterized collection of models vary monotonically with the parameter. Most of these examples are manifestations of complementarity, with a common explicit or implicit theoretical basis in properties of a super-modular function on a lattice. Supermodular functions yield a characterization for complementarity and extend the notion of complementarity to a general setting that is a natural mathematical context for studying complementarity and monotone comparative statics. Concepts and results related to supermodularity and monotone comparative stati...

Essays on Signaling and Social Networks

Over the last few decades some analytic tools intensely used by economics have produced useful insights in topics formerly in the exclusive reach of other social sciences. In particular game theory, justifiable from either a multi-person decision theoretic perspective or from an evolutionary one, often serves as a generous yet sufficiently tight framework for interdisciplinary dialogue. The three essays in this collection apply game theory to answer questions with some aspects of economic interest. The three of them have in common that they are related to topics to which other social sciences, specially sociology, have made significant contributions. While working within economics I have att...

Contracting Over Actions

Contracting Over Actions

I consider models in which contracts are written over the verifiable actions taken by an agent in multiple decisions. The principal's preferences over actions depend on underlying states of the world, but only the agent observes the states. The principal cannot audit the agent's information or punish her ex post for having taken inappropriate actions. Moreover, the principal is uncertain about the agent's preferences conditional on the states. Chapter 2 extends the concept of a quota contract to account for discounting and for the possibility of infinitely many periods: a discounted quota fixes the number of expected discounted plays on each action. Discounted quotas are optimal contract for...

Tropical and Idempotent Mathematics and Applications

This volume contains the proceedings of the International Workshop on Tropical and Idempotent Mathematics, held at the Independent University of Moscow, Russia, from August 26-31, 2012. The main purpose of the conference was to bring together and unite researchers and specialists in various areas of tropical and idempotent mathematics and applications. This volume contains articles on algebraic foundations of tropical mathematics as well as articles on applications of tropical mathematics in various fields as diverse as economics, electroenergetic networks, chemical reactions, representation theory, and foundations of classical thermodynamics. This volume is intended for graduate students and researchers interested in tropical and idempotent mathematics or in their applications in other areas of mathematics and in technical sciences.

Stochastic Models in Operations Research: Stochastic optimization

This two-volume set of texts explores the central facts and ideas of stochastic processes, illustrating their use in models based on applied and theoretical investigations. They demonstrate the interdependence of three areas of study that usually receive separate treatments: stochastic processes, operating characteristics of stochastic systems, and stochastic optimization. Comprehensive in its scope, they emphasize the practical importance, intellectual stimulation, and mathematical elegance of stochastic models and are intended primarily as graduate-level texts.
