ECTO-NOX Proteins

This volume documents this unique family of cell surface proteins. Despite masquerading as intractable and difficult to clone and characterize, ENOX proteins have and continue to offer remarkable opportunities for research, commercial development and outside confirmation of therapeutic, diagnostic and new paradigms to help explain complex biological processes.

Biomembranes

Membrane research holds a central position in cell and molecular biology. In recent years it has become clear that the study of membranes at the molecular level is of great importance not only to decipher all cellular processes but also to understand the alterations leading to abnormal cells (including cancer cells) and/or to understand the action of various drugs. This book covers the multidisciplinary approach of research in this area and the permanent need for information regarding recent advances. It will serve both workers studying basic aspects of membrane structure and function as well as medically oriented scientists. The selection of topics illustrating interconnections between basic and applied membrane biology will cross-fertilize research in both groups.

The virtually universal popularity of caffeine, together with concerns about its potential pathogenic effects, have made it one of the most extensively studied drugs in history. However, despite the massive scientific literature on this important substance, most reviews have either focused on limited areas of study or been produced in popular form

Separations Using Aqueous Phase Systems

The use of aqueous two-phase systems for the partitioning of macromolecules, organelles and cells was originally developed by Per-Ake Albertsson in Sweden in the mid-fifties [1-3]. These systems were initially applied to separations of plant organelles and viruses but their use has now extended into most areas of cell biology and biochemistry [4,5]. Since 1979 biennial International Conferences on Partitioning in Aqueous Two-Phase Systems have been held in Los Angeles (1979), Sheffield (1981), Vancouver (1983) and Lund (1985). The 5th conference was held in Oxford from 23-28 August 1987 and was entitled "Advances in Separations Using Aqueous Phase Systems in Cell Biology and Biotechnology". ...
