ÒIÕm happy to have been a part of history, however small my role was.Ó The words of Wardiman Djojonegoro reveal Indonesian history the way only a man who worked alongside Ali Sadikin, B. J. Habibie and Soeharto can. The modest 85-year-old, a former education minister and current foundation chairman at the Habibie Center, recalls the younger days of a Òbig villageÓ Jakarta and says it was the countryÕs third president who taught him the keys to national development. This is what Peter Zack, a reporter for the Jakarta Globe, wrote on 18 April 2009. In the present English translation of his 2014 memoir, Standing on the Shoulders of Giants: Reminiscences of Working with Three Great Indones...
OSCT Indonesia is a company established in 2011 by Bayu Satya based on his concern about oil spill disasters in the seas. Before that, this entrepreneur from Palembang, South Sumatra, had been involved for decades in the world of manufacturing oil spill response equipment with the brand Slickbar Indonesia. The idea for establishing OSCT Indonesia was motivated by the reality that many companies are not able to buy, store, and operate oil spill response equipment in their operational headquarters. Even though, the risk of oil spill disasters is always lurking when not expected. An oil spill disaster in the seas creates a chain of terrible impacts that are so destructive. The environment is da...
This book brings something new in both dimension and detail to our understanding of Southeast Asia from the first to the fourteenth centuries. It puts Southeast Asia in the context of the international trade that stretched from Rome to China and draws upon a wide range of recent scholarship in history and the social sciences to redefine the role that this trade played in the evolution of the classical states of Southeast Asia. By examining the sources of Southeast Asia's classical era with the tools of modern economic history, the author shows that well-developed socioeconomic and political networks existed in Southeast Asia before significant foreign economic penetration took place. With th...

This classic volume, by a well-known linguist, constitutes a systematic introduction to sociolinguistics, unmatched in the clarity and forcefulness of its approach, and to the study of language in its social setting.
Spradley should be read by anyone who wants to gain a true understanding of the process of participant observation. This text is a follow-up to his ethnographic research handbook, The Ethnographic Interview, and guides readers through the technique of participant observation to research ethnography and culture. Spradley shows how to analyze collected data and to write an ethnography. The appendices include research questions and writing tasks.
Alessandro Duranti introduces linguistic anthropology as an interdisciplinary field which studies language as a cultural resource and speaking as a cultural practice. The theories and methods of linguistic anthropology are introduced through a discussion of linguistic diversity, grammar in use, the role of speaking in social interaction, the organisation and meaning of conversational structures, and the notion of participation as a unit of analysis. Linguistic Anthropology will appeal to undergraduate and graduate students.
