Over the past two decades it has become widely recognized that housing issues have to be placed in a broader framework recognizing that civil society in the form of Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and their allies are increasingly networking and emerging as strong players that cannot easily be overlooked.This book brings together different perspectives on multi-scalar approaches within the housing field and on grassroots’ engagement with formal agencies including local government, higher levels of government and international agencies. By moving away from romanticizing local self-initiatives, it focuses on understanding the emerging potential once local initiatives are interlinked and scaled-up to transnational networks.

Social Strategies Building the City
Social housing is a complex system integrated by social, economic, political and city making processes. Social practices in the called social production of the habitat provide clues to understand an alternative way to approach housing solutions in which several dimensions coexist. Through the rationalization of social (self-management), economic (social economy) and urban principles, it was possible the construction of typologies to document and evaluate 3 case studies in Latin America. Palestinian Berlin
How do Palestinian immigrants perceive and use the public space in the city of Berlin? Is their perception and use of space homogenous as a group? What are the main patterns of their socio-spatial practices in public spaces? How do they influence the urban landscape of the neighborhoods in which they live? Which factors play a role in their perception and use of public space and how do the hybrid identities of the second and third generations affect their socio-spatial behavior in comparison to the first generation? Urban Oman
The book traces urbanisation patterns in Oman looking at the coastal strip of Muscat Capital Area. This metropolitan region emerged within the last 50 years almost out of nowhere and is now home of the majority of the national and expatriate population of Oman. Urbanisation, and the socio-political, economic and environmental aspects attached to it, become an index of the radical spatial transformation of the Sultanate. This process, if managed well, also holds the key to sustainable urban development. Sandile Mbatha explores the concept of informality in relation to how such beneficiaries challenge predominant understandings of property relations.
