Jean-Michel Basquiat's self-portraits are regarded as being among the most important of his radical creative works. In addition to some 50 specific portraits of himself, we can also see his series of likenesses of African-American men as concealed reproductions of the artist. In the New York of the eighties, Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) was the first African-American artist to receive international attention. The enormous scope of his oeuvre is inversely proportional to the short, productive period he was given. As the complexity and trailblazing innovative power of his paintings and drawings has been previously discussed at length, this book focuses on the creative aspect of language in Basquiat's work. With its complex structures, spontaneous rhythms, and sampled, collage-like manifestations appealing to all of the senses, his work was vaulted into the orbit of the Beat Generation's pop poets and the protagonists of the musical avant-garde. The multitalented Basquiat created a shimmering, syncopated fabric of images and text, which the American curator and critic Robert Storr aptly called 'eye rap'. It was this unpretentious, avant-garde and spontaneous way of working with which Jean-Michel Basquiat wrote art history. It was an artistic means for him to respond to the complexity of modern life in the big city.

Claude Monet
The Albertina is devoting a large monographic exhibition to Claude Monet's treatment of color, which has seen little examination to date, as well as to the painter's passionate fascination with the world of plants and water in the garden of his country home in Giverny. Three paintings from the museum's own holdings as well as important loan works from international museums and private collections illuminate Monet's development from realism to impressionism and onward to a mode of painting in which colors and light gradually separate from the subjects that reflect them, with the motif breaking free from mere observation of nature. Eventually, albeit only after Monet's death, these late works would pave the way for abstract expressionism in painting. On view from 21 September 2018 until 6 January 2019. The New York art scene of the 1980s is legendary – vital, creative and multimedia-based. It provided young talent with a playground full of opportunities. Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Francesco Clemente are three of the main protagonists of this era.Between 1983 and 1985, they produced a number of collaborative works, whose appeal was based on their contrary painterly gestures.
