The Zebra Duiker Do Your Kids Know This?

Have you seen a zebra? Probably. Have you seen an antelope? Maybe. But have you seen a zebra antelope? A Duiker is actually a species of antelope, so the Zebra Duiker is an antelope - not a zebra. As you can see, however, Zebra Duikers have stripes - much like zebras. Stripes are actually associated with zebras (at least in the animal world), so that explains why this type of antelope is named that way. Actually, it also goes by other names. Since its most notable characteristic is the stripes on its back, it is also called Striped-Back Duiker. Since stripes are also called bands, they are also called Banded Duikers. Lina, the Duiker & the Dragonfly

Lina accompanies her grandfather into the forest to search for healing plants when they meet up with a game warden who tells them about poachers’ snares that he has discovered. Lina is told to wait and sit on a rock while her grandfather, Pa’Tuusi, and the warden look for the snares. She is frightened of being alone; she can’t ‘talk’ to the animals the way her grandfather does, but then a dragonfly attracts her attention and she follows it to find a little duiker caught in a snare. She loses her way, but elephants help her and the duiker find their way back to her grandfather. The story is intriguing, with a slight amount of tension to keep it interesting. Says author Lisa Steyn: ‘South Africa has so many cultures that have deep historic connections to the land and nature, and that is what inspired me to tell a contemporary story of a little girl of Khoekhoe descent, who’s grandfather still knows some of the ancient ways ... the nearly inexplicable connection that the First People of this land had with their environment, and some still have, seems to me like pure natural magic.’

Jan Duiker (1890-1935), an independent architect associated with the modern movement in Holland, had a great personal interest in social welfare, an issue which exercised his architectural talents in writings and schemes aimed at creating a better world. This profusely illustrated and throughly documented book presents Duiker`s work in its entirety, from the first houses in The Hague (1918-1922), to one of his most complex and influential buildings, the Zonnestraal sanatorium in Hilversum (1926-1928), through to his last projects, such as the Cineac cinema (1933) and the Winter department stores (1934), both in Amsterdam, and the Gooiland hotel and theatre (1934-1936) in Hilversum.

Thirteen Cents

Every city has an unspoken side. Cape Town, between the picture postcard mountain and sea, has its own shadow: a place of dislocation and uncertainty, dependence and desperation, destruction and survival, gangsters, pimps, pedophiles, hunger, hope, and moments of happiness. Living in this shadow is Azure, a thirteen-year-old who makes his living on the streets, a black teenager sought out by white men, beholden to gang leaders but determined to create some measure of independence in this dangerous world. Thirteen Cents is an extraordinary and unsparing account of a coming of age in Cape Town. Reminiscent of some of the greatest child narrators in literature, Azure’s voice will stay with the reader long after this short novel is finished. Based on personal experiences, Thirteen Cents is Duiker’s debut novel, originally published in 2000. This first edition to be published outside South Africa includes an introduction by Shaun Viljoen and a special glossary of South African words and phrases from the text translated into English.
