Poverty and Exclusion in a Global World
In Western Europe, the notion of social exclusion is rapidly diffusing in recent years. This book investigates the notion of social exclusion as a new way to approach social issues such as the 'new poverty' long-term-unemployment, precariousness, social polarization and disintegration. Particular attention is paid to both the global relevance of an approach in terms of social exclusion and its value compared to more conventional approaches in terms of poverty of deprivation. It is shown that social exclusion goes beyond these by explicitly embracing the relational as well as the distributional aspects of poverty and emphasizing processes. In this book, the authors explore the specific forms of social exclusion in the ongoing processes of globalization, deregulation, crisis of the welfare state, and rise of individualism.

Regional Competitiveness
There is now a wide spread interest in regions as a key focus in the organization and governance of economic growth and wealth creation. This important book considers the factors that influence and shape the competitive performance of regions. This is not just an issue of academic interest and debate, but also of increasing policy deliberation and action. However, as the readings in this book make clear, the very idea of regional competitiveness is itself complex and contentious. Many academics and policy makers have used the concept without fully considering what is meant by the term and how it can be measured. Policy formulation has tended to rush ahead of understanding and analysis, and the purpose of this book is to close this important gap in understanding. The published proceedings, collected in seven volumes, contain the contributions accepted for publication of the 25th conference of the Société de Linguistique Romane (Innsbruck 2007). The range of themes includes various areas of diachronous and synchronous Romance linguistics. Particular thought has been given to Romanian und several small Romance languages. The articles written in the Romance languages (French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian) provide a panorama of current Romance linguistics, its present fields of interest and research orientation as well as the latest bibliographical information.
Autonomy and the New World Order
There are two reasons for writing this book. The first is practical and political, the other is theoretical and political. The practical reason is the attempt to promote peace that is punctuated with violent local skirmishes in various trouble spots in the world in an effort to realize the noble goal of national self-determination. The theoretical is to clarify the concept of and the reasons for "self-determination". Finally, the political reasons are (a) to take the discussion outside the legal profession and introduce practical and theoretical considerations, and (b) to argue that it is time for the governments comprising the United Nations to step in, define self-determination, and establish a new mechanism for the 21st century that can facilitate peacefully the right to self-determination.
