Q-Ships and Their Story
This work presents a historical account of the remarkable and courageous stories of all the combats during the First World War when Germany's use of submarine warfare provoked public uproar and jeopardized Britain's trade routes and its very ability to carry on the war. The British had to think of something to defeat them, and they considered Q-ships to be the right way. Q-ships were heavily armed merchant ships with hidden weaponry created to draw submarines into making surface attacks in order to get a chance to sink them. The work contains details from the tactics that were used by the royal navy to the life on board a Q-ship and finally how they carried out their plan. Written shortly after the war, based on interviews with numerous personalities and several manuscripts related to the subject, this work contains accurate descriptions of the various ships employed and the daring men sailing them, along with several unknown details. This book is a must-read to get a fact-based and comprehensive outlook of the Royal Navy.
King's Cutters and Smugglers 1700-1855
This book covers the history of smuggling between the 1700 to 1855, which can be said as the time when the practice was widespread and even sanctioned. The author states that in the following pages, he has endeavored to resist the temptation to weave a web of pleasant but unreliable fiction around actual occurrences. That which is here set forth has been derived from facts, and in almost every case from manuscript records. It aims at telling the story of an eventful and exciting period according to historical and not imaginative occurrence. There are extant many novels and short stories which have for their heroes the old-time smugglers. But the present volume represents an effort to look at these exploits as they were and not as a novelist likes to think they might have occurred. Perhaps there is hardly an Englishman who was not thrilled in his boyhood days by Marryat and others when they wrote of the King's Cutters and their foes. It is hoped that the following pages will not merely revive pleasant recollections but arouse a new interest in the adventures of a species of sailing craft that is now, like the brig and the fine old clipper-ship, past and done with.
The Old East Indiamen

It was the name given to the ships that used to carry the trade between India and Europe. His voyages across the English Channel, to the Netherlands, around the Mediterranean and through the French canals led to many articles and books. Joining the R.N.V.R. at the outbreak of the Great War he commanded a motor launch flotilla, leaving the service as a Lieutenant Commander. In 1918 he was appointed to the Naval section of the Official History Committee, where he worked until 1922. Keble Chatterton is unquestionably one of the most important and vivid nautical authors of the past century using both first hand accounts from the people that were there at the time and having the opportunity to access to official documents. Chatterton recorded the maritime history of Britain at its most momentous point of change, from sail to steam, from the advent of the submarine to the carrier. A very fine account of the joint Royal Navy and US Naval anti-submarine operation in the Western Approaches, to break the German blockade during The Great War. E. Keble Chatterton was well placed to write this history as he commanded a Motor Launch flotilla at Queenstown during this period.
