Black Shadows and Through the White Looking Glass: Remembrance of Things Past and Present is about the captivity, exploitation and suffering of Black people in America, and their triumphs. The author, a history buff, took the challenge to look at the history of Black people in America, who are normally given one month, the shortest month of the year, February, to highlight Black History in America, and wrote this epic. For those who would separate Black History in America from American history, know this: American history and Black History in America are one and the same; one does not exist without the other, even though the latter has oftentimes been relegated to the shadows of American history. Black Shadows and Through the White Looking Glass is a co-winner of the Edwin Mellen Poetry Prize for an epic poem (1998) and was published in 2000 by the Edwin Mellen Poetry Press.

Through the Waters

Links to the Exodus and the Day of Atonement are found throughout the book of Genesis. These links are so pervasive that, though often overlooked, they are an integral part of the literary strategy of the author of Genesis. The goal of Through the Waters is to aid the reader in understanding the book of Genesis as the author intended, taking into account its literary and historical features. The goal is not only to understand each section of the book of Genesis on its own but also to understand how each section contributes to the book as a unified narrative. As each narrative section is explored and explained, the presence of the Exodus motif, or pattern, and what will be referred to as the Two-Goats motif will be highlighted. As these motifs are understood in the context of the text of Genesis, it will be seen how they contribute to the literary structure and to the tensions, expectations, and hope created by the book of Genesis.

The Last Hurrah

Set in Mantic Games’ Warpath universe and based on its sports tabletop game Dreadball. Ex Corporation Striker Leeland Roth teeters on the horns of a dilemma: return to the sport that once defined his life, or continue to drown his sorrows in booze, babes, and back alleys. The choice is not as simple as it may seem, for Roth cannot shake the crippling guilt that plagues him day after day. But a new opportunity has arisen, and the lure of the spotlight, the drama, the fans, and the money, may bring him out of the shadows. Roth must now cobble together a team of nobodies and coach them to glory in a thirty-two-team tournament that promises big rewards for the winner. Along the way, he will face a battalion of dangers: death, injury, Digby corruption, corporate greed, familial hatreds, bribery, rebellion, and even the limitations of his own abilities as a coach. Can this former DreadBall star rise to the occasion, or will this be his last hurrah?

This Special Issue on Antimicrobial Resistance in Environmental Waters features 11 articles on the monitoring and surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in natural aquatic systems (i.e., reservoirs, rivers), and effluent discharge from water treatment plants to assess the effectiveness of AMR removal and resulting loads in treated waters. Some of the key elements of AMR studies presented in this Special Issue highlight the underlying drivers of AMR contamination in the environment and the evaluation of the hazard imposed on aquatic organisms in receiving environments through ecological risk assessments. As described in this Issue, screening antimicrobial peptide (AMP) libraries for biofilm disruption and antimicrobial candidates are promising avenues for the development of new treatment options to eradicate resistance.

Waterborne transmission of disease has been documented throughout history. One of the greatest contributions to 20% century society has been the advent and application of water treatment technologies. However, analysis of current World Health Organization (WHO) estimates of illness and mortality and epidemiological investigations in the United States still indicates that the threat to public health from waterborne disease still exists There are a plethora of contaminants (both chemical and microbiological) that impose a direct risk to public health in the United States. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reviews these contaminants and focuses its efforts upon the chemica...

Liming of Acidified Surface Waters

Acidification is one of the most serious environmental problems - especially in Sweden, which suffers most from the consequences of acid rain. Besides international negotiations to reduce sulphur emissions - 85% of the acid load on Sweden can be traced to emissions from outside the country itself - the Swedish Government has employed large-scale, operative liming activities to counteract acidification of surface waters. The scientific results show that - although acidification cannot be solved by liming alone - the measures taken resulted in substantial improvements to around 8,000 Swedish lakes and watercourses. The idea is that other countries affected by acidification may also profit from this experience.
