Seit vor 50 Jahren der erste Band von Emil Vetters 'Handbuch der italischen Dialekte' mit Texten, Texterklärung, Glossen und Wörterverzeichnis erschienen ist, hat sich unsere Kenntnis dieser Sprachen erheblich erweitert. Die Textmenge ist fast um ein Drittel angewachsen; die Überlieferung reicht jetzt bis ins 7. Jhd. v. Chr. zurück; mit dem Südpikenischen wurde ein neuer Sprachzweig entdeckt, der gleichberechtigt neben Oskisch und Umbrisch steht, Anlass, den Terminus 'Oskisch-Umbrisch' durch 'Sabellisch' zu ersetzen. Der Band bildet die Basis für eine linguistische Bearbeitung der Sprachen. Er enthält die Texte (und zwar nur die sabellischen) samt epigraphischem Apparat, eine Übersicht über die Fundbereiche, ein Onomastikon und ausführliche Indices.
