Assuring the Quality of Health Care in the European Union

People have always travelled within Europe for work and leisure, although never before with the current intensity. Now, however, they are travelling for many other reasons, including the quest for key services such as health care. Whatever the reason for travelling, one question they ask is "If I fall ill, will the health care I receive be of a high standard?" This book examines, for the first time, the systems that have been put in place in all of the European Union's 27 Member States. The picture it paints is mixed. Some have well developed systems, setting standards based on the best available evidence, monitoring the care provided, and taking action where it falls short. Others need to overcome significant obstacles.

Accountability Through Measurement

Accountability Through Measurement: A Global Healthcare Imperative looks at the need for healthcare organizations to become more accountable for their performance. The book discusses the necessary mindset, structures, tools, and communication modes needed for healthcare to be accountable to itself, as well as to external audiences, about its own performance. At the heart of this is the need for a greater degree of disclosure, which in turn requires rigorous methods of measurement. This book places the requirement of disclosure at the center of the accountability mandate and presents concrete ways in which performance can be measured, analyzed, communicated, and used toward performance improvement. This approach does not place the responsibility of accountability on the providers only but makes it a joint effort between the providers and recipients.

Multilingual Dictionary Of Disaster Medicine And International Relief

In recent decades natural, technological and other disasters have been increasing in frequency and magnitude, and the involvement of international organizations and professionals from different disciplines has been growing in parallel. By definition major emergencies call for outside aid and often international assistance. The many agencies and individual helpers from different countries, different languages and different specialties converge on the stricken site with the sole object of helping the victims, who are themselves of a different background and language. Communication among these people and a certain understanding of the varying terminology of the many professions and activities t...

Enemy Images in American History

It seems to be a tenet of the human condition to perceive “others” as “different” and potentially hostile. In nearly all societies stereotypes are developed to stigmatize suspected enemies within and without. The American case is particularly interesting in this respect because American society consists of nothing but “others”; to be open to “others” and welcome those who are “different” is one of the basic tenets of the country. However, this principle often conflicts with the need to integrate all these “strangers” into a homogeneous, governable society, which causes the formation of hostile stereotypes of certain ethnic groups that do not “fit in.” The authors in this volume look at the development of these “enemy images,” which form a fairly consistent pattern, from the period of the American Revolution to the post–World War II era. In doing so, they focus on the question of to what extent these enemy images influence the formulation and outcome of foreign, domestic, and immigration policies.
