Macro-Corruption and Institutional Co-Optation
The judicial case popularly known as "Lava Jato" is not just another scandal of corruption in which considerable public resources (billion of dollars) were unlawfully diverted and appropiated by poweful individuals. It is a systemic and transnational networks of corruption that co-opted outstanding Brazilian institutions in order to satisfy few powerful exclusive interests. Therefore, the "Lava Jato" is herein conceptualized as a network of macro-corruption and institutional co-optation; an intricate and perverse system planned and established by political parties and politicians, high ranking public officers and public entities, and private companies and business people to unlawfully divers and "lunder" large amounts of public resources in favor of powerful private interests. This book is a detailed analysis of the "Lava Jato" network, its structure and operative functioning. It also proposes societal reforms and innovative conceptual and methodological approaches that could contribute to effectively understand, prevent and confront complex networks of macro-corruption and institutional co-optation, as those being reproduced nowadays in many regions.
Crimilegal Orders, Governance and Armed Conflict
Comprehensively laying out the concept of crimilegality, this book presents a novel perspective on the relationship between what is conventionally termed organised crime and political order in the contemporary developing world. In hybrid crimilegal orders the moral, normative and social boundaries between legality and illegality-criminality are blurred, and through the violation of the official law, the illegal-criminal sphere of social life becomes legitimate and morally acceptable, while the legal turns illegitimate and immoral. Several examples of crimilegality and crimilegal governance in Colombia and Nigeria, including in relation to armed conflict termination, are used to illustrate these complex processes.

Undermining the State from Within
Undermining the State from Within pulls back the curtain on the counterinsurgent state to better understand how conflict dynamics affect state institutions and continue to shape political and economic development in the postwar period. Drawing on unique archival and interview data from war and postwar Central America, this book illuminates how counterinsurgent actors, under the pretext of combatting an insurgent threat, introduce alternative rules within state institutions, which undermine core activities like tax collection, public security provision, and property administration. Moreover, it uncovers how the counterinsurgent elite outmaneuvers governance reforms during democratic transition and peacebuilding to preserve the predatory wartime status quo. In so doing, this book rethinks the relationship between war and state formation, challenges existing scholarly and policy approaches to peacebuilding and post-conflict institutional reform and contributes a new understanding of what civil war leaves behind in an institutional sense.
