Este livro problematiza os efeitos do diálogo entre a linguagem literária das crônicas de Lima Barreto (1881 – 1922) e a experiência urbana no Rio de Janeiro durante o início dos 1900. A obra considera a reelaboração que o escritor carioca realiza de recursos do jornalismo e o manejo das técnicas de imagem como formas que assumiram o diálogo entre a técnica literária do autor e a realidade das grandes cidades no início do século XX. Trata-se de uma prosa ensaística que, ao problematizar a cidade e as diversas alterações vividas na percepção, defende que a crônica de Lima Barreto se abriu a novos padrões de experiência. Em especial, a análise aprofunda de maneira complementar a relação entre a literatura do cronista e os novos padrões perceptivos das grandes cidades modernas.

Leprosy is one of the oldest recorded debilitating diseases affecting mankind, the immunopathology of which is characterized by fluctuating granulomatous inflammation that targets mainly skin and peripheral nerve. The disease is caused by infection with Mycobacterium leprae, a slow growing obligatory intracellular and non-cultivatable organism. The disease is manifested with diverse pathology due to varied immune (both innate and adaptive) responses of the hosts as a result of cognate interaction with the organism. Of note, leprosy can be regarded as a unique model to elucidate the complexity of host immunity at both skin and systemic levels.
