This book, which is part of the Ivorypress Architecture series, presents a conversation between Oscar Niemeyer and Norman Foster, for which Hans Ulrich Obrist was also present. A conversation that reveals the first and only encounter that took place between these two great architects, shortly before Niemeyer's death. The interview reveals many shared interests between the two architects, some of which were to be expected and others that are very surprising indeed. They shared a passion for the practice of drawing and a conviction of its centrality for architectural work. "Architecture should not only be about designing a building that works well: it can also be beautiful, it can be different, it can be surprising, can't it? In fact, surprise is the main element of a work of art."
A journey from blooming fruit trees to carpets of fragile flowers, from dark wet branches to pistils surrounded by loud, vivid colours. Throughout this visual offering of nature came the human figure, haunting, questioning, suffering and hoping. How is it that the forces of life grow over what's left dead? How do we reach the other side? On asking these questions, Berger observes how human nature exists within nature itself and transforms it into something both terrible and beautiful. The show features recent works on paper using three different techniques: monoprints of apple trees executed during Spring 2016, etchings of human figures worked on over the last few years, and pastel drawings of flowers executed in an Alpine botanical garden during the month of June 2016.
"This diminutive artist's book was specially commissioned by Ivorypress as part of an ongoing series. 'Verso' is a previously unpublished work by British sculptor and installation artist Cornelia Parker. Taking button samplers as her starting point, Parker uncovers the patterns left by the buttons and holes on the reverse side of these mundane pieces, using string and thread to create drawings and paths while attempting to reveal the motivations they might hide, or even what they could say about those who made them. A short but evocative text by Colm Tóibín offers some perspective on the work."--Www.ideabooks.nl, accessed 25 May 2016.
