Tennessee Records

An encyclopedia of Tennessee genealogy, Acklen's "Bible Records and Marriage Bonds" is one of the foremost Tennessee source-books in print. It consists almost entirely of records of births, marriages, and deaths, plus marriage licenses of Dickson, Knox, Lebanon, and Wilson counties. Sections devoted exclusively to marriages generally run chronologically, giving exact dates and full names of brides and grooms. The bible records, however, offer the most substantial evidence of family connections and, in the manner of such records, are actually organic family records listing names and dates of birth, marriage, and death through several generations, depending, of course, on the extent to which a particular bible was handed on in the family and kept up to date. The work is complemented by a surname index of nearly 15,000 entries.

Sketches of Prominent Tennesseans

"I had a native ambition to rise from obscurity and make myself useful in the world, to shine and be distinguished." So said the Hon. Neil S. Brown, one of the 259 prominent 19th-century Tennesseans profiled in this extraordinary book. It is this kind of unique first-hand biographical information that makes this work unequaled in the canon of Tennessee genealogical literature. Not only did compiler William S. Speer have the unparalleled opportunity to interview a number of the featured Tennesseans himself, he also was able to garner--and include in this book--thousands and thousands of names of their family members, friends, and colleagues. The biographical sketches include numerous details about the lives of the subjects and their families. In addition, the compiler offers insight into the personal, professional, and sometimes even physical characteristics that made each of these men a success.

In his 85 years on Earth, Evert Loyd Blaylock led an exciting if ordinary life. After growing up on a farm in Tennessee and hunting to survive the Great Depression, he joined the Navy and became a ship's cook who traveled the world during World War II. He rose above the label of "hillbilly", eventually becoming the boxing champion of his ship. Above all else, he combined the ruggedness of his rural upbringing and boxing glory with the intellect that accompanied his avid reading and heartfelt writing in order to overcome the odds in life.

History of the Thirteenth Regiment Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry U.S.A.

Though officially one of the Confederate States, much of Upper East Tennessee remained loyal to the Union. This loyalty was so fierce that it became necessary for the Confederacy to occupy the area. Driven from their homes, many men slipped through Confederate lines and joined the Union Army. The Thirteenth Regiment is one unit whose roster consisted of these Loyal Lincolnites, primarily made up of men from Johnson and Carter Counties.

The Mental Circus

It seems that these days we are far too busy for independent thinking. There has been a steady decline of interest in substance and intellectual humor, critical thinking is endangered, and the yin and yang of discourse is rapidly diminishing. As Anthony Storr wisely observed, “Originality implies being bold enough to go beyond accepted norms,” and author Ronnie G. Shaeffer has found that deviation from regularity is his true daily dessert. His new book, The Mental Circus, is an engaging quote-a-day collection of insights and humor from the famous to the not-so-famous, including Shaeffer’s own quotes, notes, and artwork. This easy-to-read collection looks at life, love, and the pursuit of happiness, with valuable life lessons to help you develop an enlightened personal philosophy. It’s sure to make you think, possibly embolden a creative thought, and give you a glimpse into someone else’s head—with the ultimate purpose of expanding, improving, questioning, and delighting in your own humanity.
