Joanna Szczęk definiert aus pragmalinguistischer Perspektive die Textsorte Absageschreiben in den Ausprägungen Aperitif-Brief, eigentliches Absageschreiben und Eisschreiben sowie deren spezifische Merkmale. Sie beschreibt die Illokutionsstruktur in Absageschreiben, charakterisiert anhand dessen die Mechanismen des Verneinens im Lichte der Höflichkeitstheorie und entwirft eine Typologie ablehnender Reaktionen. Im Zentrum der Analyse stehen authentische deutsche Absagebriefe aus den Jahren 2001 bis 2012. Die kulturologische Analyse ist interdisziplinär angelegt und stützt sich primär auf Methoden der Sprachwissenschaft (Textlinguistik, Pragmalinguistik, Rhetorik) und Psychologie.

«Wissensübertragung» in der Zeit zwischen 1830 und 1870, also der Epoche nach der Konjunktur romantischer Wissenspoetiken und vor dem Aufkommen und der Verbreitung der Neuen Medien und den innovativen wissenschaftlichen und technischen Errungenschaften des ausgehenden 19. Jahrhunderts, ist Thema des vorliegenden Bandes. Die methodisch-theoretische Schärfung des Konzepts von «Wissen» und das Interesse an den Verfahren und Regeln der «Wissensübertragung» werden in der intensiven Auseinandersetzung mit Stifter und dessen Werk profiliert. Die analysierten Texte Stifters und einiger seiner Zeitgenossen beschäftigen sich mit verschiedenen Praktiken der Übertragung und halten zudem eigene und spezifische Theorien der Wissensübertragung bereit, die auch heute noch weitergehende Reflexionen provozieren. Stifter hat Einbildungskraft, scharfen Verstand und wissenschaftliche Ausbildung insbesondere in Philosophie, Geschichte und Naturwissenschaft als Zulassungskriterien für den öffentlich Wirkenden gefordert; es sind dies Qualitäten, die nicht nur für die zahlreichen Künstler- und Wissenschaftlerfiguren in seinen Texten bestimmend sind.
