Hitting children used to be part of Danish culture. In the song about Spørge Jørgen (loosely translatable as ‘Inquisitive Jørgen’), Kamma Laurents defended the right to do so. Robert Storm Petersen did the illustrations. But instead of taking the lyrics at face value, he chided the song, drawing counter-illustrations. Repudiating. Parodying. Thus began one of the most popular children’s books in Denmark. Hvorfor? Storm P., Spørge Jørgen og kampen om retten til at stille spørgsmål (“Why? Storm P., Spørge Jørgen, and the fight for the right to ask questions”) places Spørge Jørgen in a literary-historical, pedagogical, and cultural context while giving a big-picture portrait of Storm P., this artistic Renaissance man, whose capricious whims and seriousness are an undeniable part of Danish culture.
