About this Book Emma Street does exist and for some twenty years was the home of the McDuffie family in Tampa, Florida. The house was on an oak lined street, paved with asphalt bricks and sidewalks on either side. It had a large rock formation in the side yard in the shape of an M, with spaces for flowers to be planted. Not a wealthy family but we didnt really know we were poor either as we always had food on the table, a fairly warm place to sleep and clothes on our back. Six children being raised by a widowed mother so we had chores to do and helped out with small jobs over the years to make ends meet. The time of this writing covers my memories between 1938 through 1952. I shall always be indebted to my Mother, Louise, for the love and guidance given to me and my siblings as we grew to adulthood. Not in any chronological order, written as memory allowed.

Twenty-three year old Katy Speed is fascinated by the house across the street. The woman who lives there, Gloria, is the most glamorous neighbour on the avenue, owning a fashionable dress shop in Bexhill-on-Sea. But who is the woman who arrives in the black car most Saturdays while Gloria is at work? Sometimes she brings women to the house, other times they have children. Hilda, Katy's mother, disapproves of Gloria. She wonders if these mysterious visitors have just been released from prison. Is Gloria secretly bringing criminals, or worse, into the heart of the community? Then one night, the house burns down. In the wreckage, the bodies of Gloria and her daughter are found. Katy is sure the unexplained visitors must be responsible until her father is arrested and charged with murder. Have the police arrested the correct person? Are the rest of the street safe? The remains of Kaniakapp--King Kamehameha III's summer residence--bear no traces of the feast that once served ten thousand of his subjects gathered in celebration of Hawaiian sovereignty. Although not all historic Hawaii residences are still standing, the pictures, photographs, and comprehensive maps in this book can provide a wealth of knowledge. Discover the site of Queen Ka'ahumanu's death, Princess Ruth Ke'eliklani's house, which rivaled the splendor of King Kalkaua's official palace, and Lili'uokalani's home, where Robert Wilcox plotted an armed insurrection to overthrow the Constitution of 1887. Using accounts by missionaries, ship captains, early visitors, and reports in English and Hawaiian-language media, this groundbreaking book provides an extensive look into the now-lost residences of the kingdom's elite. Learn about the historic events that took place in the residences of Hawaiian royalty and see how the island chiefs lived their everyday lives.
