Already in 1972, the National Museum of Modern Art had a major retrospective devoted to Man Ray. Like all exhibitions held in collaboration with the artist at that time, he extensively showed his creative activity and its fascinating diversity: paintings, collages, drawings, sculptures, assemblages, etc rayographs. In relation to the photographs, the other media were there in very small numbers. The current exhibition at the Centre Pompidou proposes therefore is the complementary part of the previous. The focus is on photography by bringing together hundreds of photographs, both masterpieces of unknown, or little known, aspects of his production: portraits of Dadaists and Surrealists friends...
This book deals with the creator of Surrealist Photography. Man Ray (1890-1976) is indisputably one of the most original artists of the 20th century. His revolutionary nude studies, fashion work, and portraits opened a new chapter in the history of photography.
The accompanying catalogue to the first major exhibition to consider the relationship between the photographic medium and the history of abstraction in the twentieth century, on display at London's Tate Modern. The exhibition catalogue will be arranged in a broadly chronological way to tell the story of photography and its relationship with abstraction from around 1915 to the present day, and will include historic works in a variety of media from painting and sculpture to montage and kinetic installations. Recognized as the most original photographer of the 20th century, Man Ray delighted the avant-garde of the 1920s and 1930s with daring, creative experimentation. He was the first Surrealist photographer, a gifted rebel with an incisive eye and a passion for freedom and pleasure. This outstanding monograph sheds new light on Man Ray's photographic genius -- incredibly, around one third of these images have never before been published. Visually spectacular and intellectually stimulating it shatters the myth -- cultivated by Man Ray himself -- that his photographic creativity resulted from timely mistakes and chance occurrences. Featured are many of his solarizations, rayographs, unconventional portraits and sensual nudes.
