Piety and Power in Ireland, 1760-1960

This volume, in honour of the great historian Emmet Larkin, is organized around the two themes that have shaped his work on the Catholic Church in modern Ireland -- the role of the church in the creation of the modern Irish state, and the role of the church in defining a distinctive Irish national identity through the "devotional revolution". The various chapters explore different themes -- political, social, ecclesiastical, and literary -- but are united by their common engagement with aspects of Larkin's work on Irish culture and consciousness between the late eighteenth century and the present.

In this new volume, noted Irish historian Emmet Larkin turns hisattention to the pastoral challenges the Roman Catholic Church faced inministering to an exploding population of Irish Catholics in the yearsbefore the Great Famine of 1847. The extraordinary increase in thepopulation of Ireland from the mid-eighteenth to the mid-nineteenthcentury combined with a lack of financial resources available to thechurch as well as a shortage of clergy and sacred space proved to becrucial for adopting new methods of ministering to the Irish Catholiccommunity. How the Irish Church attempted to respond to these variouschallenges, and how it was thus uniquely shaped by them, is thecentral theme of this study.

Larkin presents the stunning thesis that the modern Irish church, in its political dimension, was created in the 1850s. From 1840 to 1860 a fierce power struggle raged, the principle differences being between the archbishop of Dublin, Daniel Murray, and the archbishop of Tuam, John MacHale, over educational and political issues. However, with the appointment by Pius X in 1849 of Paul Cullen as archbishop of Armagh and primate of all Ireland, a turning point was reached. Originally published in 1980. James Larkin

James Larkin (1876-1947) retains a central position in the pantheon of the Irish labour movement. In the popular consciousness he is most commonly linked to his role in the epic 1913 Dublin Lockout and to his turbulent leadership of the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union. Less well known is his role within international communism and his attempts to establish a significant socialist presence in southern Ireland during the 1920s. In general, labour historians have been kind to Larkin and his style of leadership, which was often abrasive and dictatorial, has often been portrayed as a form of improvisation engendered by contemporary exigencies. In this important new biography of Larkin ...
