Vulnerability and Incarceration

Vulnerability and Incarceration

In light of a history of exploitation by researchers, most of the limited scholarship on prisoners in medical ethics is focused on precaution and protections. Vulnerability and Incarceration: Evaluating Protections for Prisoners in Research explores the best ways for researchers to balance these concerns with the rights of incarcerated persons to both participate in medical research and benefit from medical and scientific progress. The book examines the historical and contemporary regulatory landscape governing prisoner participation in research and the concept of vulnerability in play when classifying prisoners as vulnerable. Elizabeth Victor discusses how this concept might preclude a prisoner’s positive right to participate in research from being acknowledged. She also addresses the differences in oversight between public and private prisoners and how the shift to privatized prisons compounds the vulnerability of prisoners in the United States.

This book comprises select proceedings of the 2015 annual conference of the Computer Society of India. The books focuses on next generation networks (NGN). An NGN is a packet-based network which can provide services including telecommunication services. NGNs make use of multiple broadband, quality-of-service-enabled transport technologies in which service-related functions are independent from underlying transport-related technologies. This volume includes contributions from experts on various aspects of NGNs. The papers included cover theory, methodology and applications of ad-hoc networks, sensor networks, and the internet. The contents also delve into how the new enterprise IT landscape of cloud services, mobility, social media usage and big data analytics creates different types of network traffic to the traditional mix of in-house client-server enterprise workloads. The contents of this book will be useful to researchers and professionals alike.

In a refreshingly novel approach to the writings of Gloria E. Anzaldúa (1942–2004), Andrea J. Pitts addresses issues relevant to contemporary debates within feminist theory and critical race studies. Pitts explores how Anzaldúa addressed, directly and indirectly, a number of complicated problems regarding agency in her writings, including questions of disability justice, trans theorizing, Indigenous sovereignty, and identarian politics. Anzaldúa's conception of what Pitts describes as multiplicitous agency serves as a key conceptual link between these questions in her work, including how discussions of agency surfaced in Anzaldúa's late writings of the 1990s and early 2000s. Not shying away from Anzaldúa's own complex and sometimes problematic framings of disability, mestizaje, and Indigeneity, Pitts draws from several strands of contemporary Chicanx, Latinx, and African American philosophy to examine how Anzaldúa's work builds pathways toward networks of solidarity and communities of resistance.

Yurtsuz

Yana yana küle dönmüş Anka Kuşu, her gece acılarından yeniden doğdu.

This book explores the existential redistributions that extractivist frontiers create, going beyond existing studies by bringing into the English-language discussion much of the wisdom from Latin American rural and forest communities’ understandings of extractivist phenomena, and the destruction and changes in lives and lived environments they create. The author explores the many different types of extractivism, ranging from agroextractivist monocultures to mineral extraction, and analyzes the differences between them. The existential transformations of Brazil's Amazon and Cerrado regions, previously inhabited by Indigenous people but now being deforested by colonizers who expand soybean p...
