Self-organization constitutes one of the most important theoretical debates in contemporary life sciences. The present book explores the relevance of the concept of self-organization and its impact on such scientific fields as: immunology, neurosciences, ecology and theories of evolution. Historical aspects of the issue are also broached. Intuitions relative to self-organization can be found in the works of such key western philosophical figures as Aristotle, Leibniz and Kant. Interacting with more recent authors and cybernetics, self-organization represents a notion in keeping with the modern world's discovery of radical complexity. The themes of teleology and emergence are analyzed by philosophers of sciences with regards to the issues of modelization and scientific explanation. The implications of self-organization for life sciences are here approached from an interdisciplinary angle, revealing the notion as already rewarding and full of promise for the future.
The book introduces a powerful new global perspective for the study of discrete dynamical systems. After first looking at the unique trajectory of a system's future, an algorithm is also presented that directly computes the multiple merging trajectories that may have constituted the system's past. A given set of cellular parameters will, in a sense, crystallize state space into a set of basins of attraction that will typically have the topology of branching trees rooted on attractor cycles. The book makes accessible the explicit portraits of these mathematical objects through computer-generated graphics. These proceedings contain the invited lectures presented at the International Sym posium on Synergetics at Schloss Elmau in April, 1982. This symposium marked the th 10 anniversary of symposia on synergetics, the first of which was held at Schloss Elmau in 1972. As is now weIl known, these symposia are devoted to the study of the formation of structures in physical systems far from thermal equilibrium, as weIl as in nonphysical systems such as those in biology and sociology. While the first proceedings were published by Teubner Publishing Company in 1973 and the second by North Holland Publishing Company in 1974, the subsequent proceed ings have been published in the Springer Series in Synergetics. I believe that these proceedings give a quite faithful picture of the developments in this new interdisciplinary field over the past decade. As H.J. Queisser recently noted, the prefix "non", which is used quite frequent ly in modern scientific literature in words such as "nonequilibrium", "nonlinear", etc., indicates a new development in scientific thinking. Indeed, this new develop ment was anticipated and given a framework in the introduction of "synergetics" more than a decade ago.

Cellular automata provide one of the most interesting avenues into the study of complex systems in general, as well as having an intrinsic interest of their own. Because of their mathematical simplicity and representational robustness they have been used to model economic, political, biological, ecological, chemical, and physical systems. Almost any system which can be treated in terms of a discrete representation space in which the dynamics is based on local interaction rules can be modelled by a cellular automata.The aim of this book is to give an introduction to the analysis of cellular automata (CA) in terms of an approach in which CA rules are viewed as elements of a nonlinear operator algebra, which can be expressed in component form much as ordinary vectors are in vector algebra. Although a variety of different topics are covered, this viewpoint provides the underlying theme. The actual mathematics used is not hard, and the material should be accessible to anyone with a junior level university background, and a certain degree of mathematical maturity.
