Manuel Gallego (born 1936), a disciple of the most important Spanish architect of the post-war period, Alejandro de la Sota, is perhaps the best exponent of radical architecture in Spain today. He is counted among the leading authorities in the field. Gallego's architecture is sensibly integrated into the urban or rural context, as the case may be. His rational buildings -a series of broken up primary forms grounded in the particulars of the place, where the spaces created open up to the outside and the walls act as the connecting elements between architecture and nature -stand out for their striking sculptural expression. The radical nature of his architecutre is solidly rooted in the vernacular, giving rise to innvoative designs in which the unapologetic use of local materials (stone, wood, glass, metal) and the handling of light create an intimate dialogue between man-made and the surrounding environment.

Refined Material

"Beginning with the oil blowout in 1922 that is considered the moment that marked Venezuela's entry into a 'modern' era, Refined Material explores the integral relationship between Venezuelan oil industry and artistic production. In this groundbreaking study, Sean Nesselrode Moncada examines Venezuela's mid-century art and architecture in an argument that reinforces the inextricability of the rise of a capitalist and centralized state from life, activism, and art. Oil provided the crucible for national reinvention, ushering in a period of dizzying optimism and bitter disillusion as artists, architects, graphic designers, activists, and critics sought to define the terms of modernity. Looking at five different but interrelated case studies--a print magazine, a planned housing community, a luxury hotel, a kinetic museum installation, and a documentary film--this book brings forth a novel reading to the renowned Venezuelan modernist canon and reveals how the logic of refinement conditioned the terms of development and redefined our relationship to nature, matter, and one another"--

Raoul Dufy

Raoul Dufy

French Fauvist painter Raoul Dufy (1877-1953), with his cheerful watercolors and oils depicting scenes of regattas and horse races, has largely been cast as a painter of luxury and leisure. This book moves away from the traditional interpretation of Dufy as a painter of pleasurable bourgeois pastimes. While not ignoring the undeniable hedonistic nature of his work, it sets out to show the gradual development of his personal style and his constant pursuit of new artistic expressions, highlighting the more introspective and reflective side of his oeuvre. Dufy was among the early 20th-century artists who did the most to combine the "greater" and "lesser" arts; like Gauguin before him, he made decoration the focus of his artistic concerns and succeeded in giving free rein to his decorative imagination.

A beautifully produced clothbound compendium of the many varieties of bonsai trees This volume compiles superb color photography of one of the most outstanding collections of bonsai in Europe, assembled by collector and author Luis Vallejo, founder of the Luis Vallejo Bonsai Museum in Alcobendas, Spain. This internationally celebrated collection boasts native specimens designed by Vallejo, as well as specimens by Japanese masters such as Masahiko Kimura, Saburo Kato, Hiroshi Takeyama and Shinji Suzuki. Eschewing a strictly taxonomical approach, the book approaches the topic more poetically, reflecting on the age in which they were designed and planted. Photographs by Fernando Maquieira taken over several years are interspersed with short texts and quotations evoking personal experiences and literary associations. Three series of sketches enhance the volume, providing the most direct expression of the author's enduring connection with his trees. Housed in a slipcase, The Wind among the Leavesis a collectible and gorgeous celebration of this ancient and evocative form of horticulture.

This book accompanied the Lotto Lorenzo Portraits exhibition at the National Gallery (5 November 2018 - 10 February 2019). Celebrated as one of the greatest portraitists of the Italian Renaissance, Lorenzo Lotto uniquely portrayed a cross section of middle-class sitters, among them clerics, merchants and humanists. Lotto depicted men, women and children in compositions rich in symbolism and imbued with great psychological depth. The prominent addition of objects which hinted at the social status, interests, and aspirations of his subjects added meaning to each work. With the inclusion of documents that have survived from Lotto's own account books, this catalogue provides extraordinary insight into the artist's individualistic style and the people he portrayed.

Outdoor Domesticity

Trees have been deliberately connected with houses since they were introduced as a prominent part of architectural design. The relationships of contiguity between houses and trees have existed since ancient times. However, at the end of the 19th century those links became explicit in the design process, as the house emerged as one of the fundamental architectural programs, and as the result of an increasing sensibility towards environmental aspects and the landscape. The first part of this publication is to present a collection of exemplary five houses that evinced explicit relationships with pre-existing trees. The five twentieth century projects are: La Casa (B. Rudofsky, 1969), Cottage Ca...
