Sports events represent, for many, landmarks for memories, contexts that securely fix moments in past time. And in America, perhaps more than in any other country, they are part of what connects the individual to the multitude. When we add them to our remembrances, they subtly suggest that, like sporting contests, our personal tales are fit for public consumption. How easy and natural it is to add a little referential sidebar to the stories we tell: “I started work in January, I remember because the Bills had just lost the Super Bowl—the fourth one.” On a broader scale, sports have left their imprint on the stony history of the nation. Beginning slowly with a game of bowls (1611), some...

On June 28, 1868, a group of men gathered alongside a road 35 miles north of Albuquerque to witness a 165-round, 6-hour bare-knuckle brawl between well-known Colorado pugilist Barney Duffy and "Jack," an unidentified fighter who died of his injuries. Thought to be the first "official" prizefight in New Mexico, this tragic spectacle marked the beginning of the rich and varied history of boxing in the state. Oftentimes an underdog in its battles with the law and public opinion, boxing in New Mexico has paralleled the state's struggles and glories, through the Wild West, statehood, the Depression, war, and economic growth. It is a story set in boomtowns, ghost towns and mining camps, along railroads and in casinos, and populated by cowboys, soldiers, laborers, barrio-bred locals and more. This work chronicles more than 70 years of New Mexico's colorful boxing past, representing the most in-depth exploration of prizefighting in one region yet undertaken.

A Separate Circle

"An insightful and well-written book. One of the best studies of local Jewish history extant."--Leonard Dinnerstein, University of Arizona For more than a century and a half, the Jewish citizens of the area in and around Knoxville, Tennessee, have maintained the rituals and traditions that define them as a separate people, even as they have blended quietly with their non-Jewish neighbors. Wendy Lowe Besmann paints a vivid picture of this community, bringing alive the stories of merchants, grocers, immigrants from Eastern Europe, and scientists and university professionals who have come to call the area home. Drawing on interviews and other sources, she traces the growth of local synagogues, ...

This is a meat-and-potatoes reference work, garnished only with a brief preface, a one-page bibliography, and an index. The text is organized by day of the month, listing in chronological order events that occurred in American history. This logical layout will make the book easy to use for librarians and patrons alike. Entries are written in a telegraphic, curt style that in some cases may require clarification. The 70-page index is useful but flawed, lacking comprehensiveness and containing some incorrect citations. The Encyclopedia of American Facts & Dates (HarperCollins, 1987. 8th ed.), while less current, is more thorough and better indexed, for less money. Recommended, with reservations, as a secondary source for public and school libraries.-- James Moffet, Baldwin P.L., Birmingham, Mich. - Library Journal.

Mike

One of Canada’s most dynamic prime ministers, Lester B. Pearson lived a life which took him from a childhood in rural Ontario to the apex of international politics. In the second volume of his memoirs, he provides a first-person account of the busy and challenging decade that followed his entry into politics in 1948. This volume, completed after Pearson’s death under the supervision of his son Geoffrey, recounts his involvement in Canadian politics and diplomacy as a MP and Secretary of State for External Affairs during the early years of the Cold War. It offers his perspective on issues such as the formation of NATO, Canada’s involvement in the Korean War, and the diplomacy that ended the Suez Crisis and earned Pearson the Nobel Peace Prize in 1957. Two appendices, taken from his diaries, show him hard at work at the United Nations during the Korean crisis. Mike captures Pearson’s intellect, his sense of humour, and his humanity, offering an inside look at the moments that shaped the twentieth century. This new edition features a foreword by Pearson cabinet minister and former prime minister Jean Chrétien.
