First published in 1996. This is Volume 12, number 4 of Psychoanalytic Inquiry 1996. Lawrence Friedman has given psychoanalysts a fresh slant on the analytic situation. He has written of the experience of the analyst, which, until recently, was uncommon in analytic literature. He has asked how analysts think in the analytic situation. This issue of Psychoanalytic Inquiry recognizes that ‘The Anatomy of Psychotherapy’ is a significant book and this is a collection of articles with commentaries by a variety of analytic writers, followed by Lawrence Friedman's response, that seeks to illuminate the important issues taken up in the book.
Politics and Philosophy
Louis Althusser’s interpretation of Niccolò Machiavelli has never really been studied in any detail as an analysis of political action and intervention. The same is also true for Althusser’s notion of aleatory materialism. Instead, these have conventionally been studied from the viewpoint of a philosophical perspective in which politics is excluded. The objective of the present book thus runs against many of the prevailing views on Althusser. Here the emphasis is placed on Althusser's advancement of a theory of materialist politics. The main argument put forward is that, for Althusser, it was essential to reflect on how the conjunctural understanding of history and reality could offer a theoretical starting point for a subversive political strategy.
Medea
This book takes Euripides tragedy of Medea as its starting point. Our unconscious fantasies can be embedded in age-old myths, and many modern works about Medea reflect our ever-present interest in such myths. The Danish film director T.H. Dreyer had plans to produce a film about the story of Medea, while his countryman Lars von Trier did in fact make his own version of Medea, based on Dreyer`s previous work on the theme. In this remarkable new book the `Medea fantasy is introduced as an unconscious determinant of psychogenic sterility, a fantasy that may form an unrecognized and dissociated part of the self-representation. The book describes how this can lead women to believe that their lovers (like Jason in the original myth) will deceive and abandon them, and that this anxiety might cause them to react violently towards their children. For such women it is imperative to forgo any creative femininity.
