Introducing Novel Trends in the Nutrition of Monogastric Farm Animals for the Production of High-Quality Livestock Products

The rearing of monogastric farm animals, especially pigs and poultry, is one of the most significant animal husbandry activities worldwide, since it contributes approximately 75% to global meat production and fully covers the needs for eggs, providing animal protein sources of high nutritional and biological value. Pig and poultry production has demonstrated admirable adaptability to changing international conditions and to modern consumer concerns and attitudes through its wide variety of products, increased productivity, and alternative production systems and feeding schemes. However, considerable work remains to be done in terms of research and development, notably regarding to climate change, welfare concerns and overall sustainability of production, particularly considering the protracted energy and economic crises, and the threats to food security.

Agricultural Biotechnology in Sub-Saharan Africa

This book offers a comprehensive analysis of the application level for various agricultural biotechnologies across Sub-Saharan Africa. The authors examine the capacity available as well as the enabling environment, including policy and investments, for facilitating agricultural biotechnology development and use in the region. For each Sub-Saharan country, the status of biotechnology application is assessed in four major sectors; Crops, Livestock, Forestry and Aquaculture. Examples such as the number and requisite skill levels of trained personnel, biosafety frameworks and public awareness are surfaced in these chapters. This work also discusses the impact of push-pull factors on research, tr...

Integrated Organic Farming Systems: Approach for Efficient Food Production and Environmental Sustainability

Researchers and policy planners are in search of a solution to address the twin challenges of maximizing agricultural production while maintaining/ improving ecosystem sustainability. Enhancing farm productivity is needed in certain regions of the world to satisfy local food consumption and farmers' needs. Linear economy-based-input intensive conventional agriculture (CAPS) has increased production output but has not made agriculture more sustainable. Henceforth, a farming system that aims to reduce the adverse impact on the environment, as well as enhance agricultural productivity by reducing environmental footprint and improving soil health and economic wellbeing is needed in the present d...

Insights in Emerging or Re-emerging Zoonoses

More than sixty percent of emerging infectious diseases that affect humans are caused by zoonotic pathogens. Over the last two centuries, there have been many examples of zoonotic microorganisms that have caused important epidemics or pandemics around the world. However, currently, zoonotic emerging infectious diseases are still or are even a higher threat for global health, including animal, public and environmental health, probably due to factors such as globalization, the increasing temperature of global health, intensive agriculture or industrialization have favored the emergence or re-emerging of these diseases, among many others. Today more than ever, the high interconnection of human,...

Myanmar’s livestock sector: An overview of production and consumption in 2022

The poultry and pig production subsectors are facing significant financial stress, primarily due to a combination of increasing production costs and declining consumer demand. Among the challenges reported by livestock raisers, the most frequent ones were sickness or death of animals, followed closely by high input prices. The cost of production for poultry and swine doubled over a two-year period, largely driven by rising feed and other input costs. Specifically, the price of 50 kg of broiler chicken feed increased by 61 percent between 2021 and 2022, while the price of 30 kg of pig feed increased by 51 percent during the same period. These significant cost increases have led to a notable d...

Food Security and Safety

This book focuses on food security and safety issues in Africa, a continent presently challenged with malnutrition and food insecurity. The continuous increase in the human population of Africa will lead to higher food demands, and climate change has already affected food production in most parts of Africa, resulting in drought, reduced crop yields, and loss of livestock and income. For Africa to be food-secure, safe and nutritious food has to be available, well-distributed, and sufficient to meet people’s food requirements. Contributors to Food Security and Safety: African Perspectives offer solutions to the lack of adequate safe and nutritious food in sub-Saharan Africa, as well as highl...

The proceedings of the 12th World Congress on Genetics Applied to Livestock Production provide you with 816 papers representing the leading research in livestock genetics around the globe. This book covers all aspects of genetics applied to livestock production in 44 sections. Next to the exciting plenary speakers, and the recurrent technical and species orientated sections, there are sections focusing on specific challenges for animal breeding. For instance, large-scale phenotyping of individual animals, use of whole genome sequence data and improving genomic prediction, and sessions on the contribution that genetics can make to societal challenges, like animal welfare, climate change, biodiversity, or control of infectious diseases.
