Las bovedas de Guastavino
Cada año, millones de personas pasan bajo las bóvedas tabicadas de Guastavino en espacios históricos de todos los Estados Unidos, desde la Sala de Registro de Ellis Island (1917) hasta el Biltmore Estate en las montañas de Carolina del Norte (1895), y desde el Capitolio del Estado de Nebraska (1932), en Lincoln, hasta los e dificios del campus de la Universidad Carnegie Mellon de Pittsburgh (1912). Sin embargo, son pocos los visitantes que aprecian la aportación de la familia valenciana Guastavino a la arquitectura estadounidense y las condiciones que propiciaron que las bóvedas tabicadas de Guastavino fueran durante décadas uno de los sistemas estructurales preferidos.
Artificial Intelligence Research and Development
Since it was formed in 1994, the Catalan Association for Artificial Intelligence (ACIA) has been promoting cooperation between researchers in artificial intelligence within the Catalan speaking community. The association now holds an annual conference in the Catalan region, which aims to foster discussion of the latest developments in artificial intelligence within the community of Catalan countries, as well as amongst members of the wider AI community. This book presents the proceedings of the 18th International Conference (CCIA 2015), held in Valencia, Spain, in October 2015. It contains full versions of the peer reviewed papers presented at the conference, as well as shorter poster contributions. In addition to this year’s dominant research trends of classification, decision support systems and data mining, many other topics are covered, ranging from theoretical aspects to descriptions of real applications. This overview of current work in the Catalan artificial intelligence community and of the collaboration between ACIA members and the AI community worldwide will be of interest to all those working in the field of artificial intelligence.
Five brief reflections on Le Corbusier's work
This little book is the result of two related events co-organized by the Escola Técnica Superior d'Arquitectura del Vallès (ETSAV) and the Illinois Architecture Study Abroad Program at Barcelona-El Vallès (IASAP-BV or Illinois Barcelona Program): the display of the traveling exhibition "LC150+ The RT+Q private collection of models of Le Corbusier's projects," and a rencontre which, under the title of "Five Brief Reflections about Le Corbusier's work," served as the exhibit's formal opening on February 22, 2023.
Xavier Nogués
In 1990, or thereabouts, the then promoters and members of the board of trustees of the Fundació Xavier Nogués, Joan Ainaud de Lasarte, Raimon Noguera de Guzmán, Josep Pedreira and Ramon Gonzalez (now sadly de- ceased), together with the patrons August Testor, Oriol Bohigas and Jordi Curós, proposed, as a founding act, the publication of a book dedicated to the life and work of Xavier Nogués. The project was given the go ahead, and the then presi- dent, Mr Ainaud, wrote the foreword to the book. However, it was subsequently put on hold until a later date, despite everyone’s best efforts. Now we are fortunate enough to be able to revive the project and, by way of a tribute, we would like to put on record the interest the above individuals showed in the publication of the book you are now holding. We would also like to thank Joaquim Horta for the painstaking care taken with the initial project and the new patrons who have worked on the current one.
2CO Communicating complexity
2CO COmmunicating COmplexity is the international design conference aiming at exploring languages, approaches and technologies to respond to the emerging need for making complex information accessible throught design. 2CO’s first edition (25-26 October 2013, Alghero, Italy) has gathered an international community of professionals and scholars active in this area to share experiences, points of views and methodologies, focusing on three main areas of interest: informative-animation, interactive data visualization, info-graphics. This volume collects their contributions in the three conference categories: full papers, posters and ‘junior track’ special session. Generated by a consortium of European Universities that in 2011 started collaborating on the InformAnimation project, and by fellow Universities active in visual design teaching and research, COmmunicating COmplexity aims at becoming an international reference point for research and education in the area of communicating complexity through new media.
Architecture RePerformed: The Politics of Reconstruction
First emerging at the beginning of the twentieth century, architectural reconstruction has increasingly become an instrument to visually revive a long bygone past. This book deals with the phenomenon of meticulous reconstruction in architecture. It argues that the politics of reconstruction go far beyond aesthetic considerations. Taking architecture as a major source of history and regional identity, the impact of large-scale reconstruction is deeply intertwined with political and social factors.
