The State Vs. Lemuel J. Davis, Indictment for Murder
On Feb. 22, 1876 Corporal Lemuel J. Davis shot and killed Brannie Hall while the victim was trying to escape from his house. Corporal Davis was part of a U.S. Army detachment sent to enforce the Internal Revenue Laws and destroy illegal distilleries in Spartanburg County, S.C. Hall was in violation of these laws and was attempting to flee when revenue officers approached his home.
