Highlighting over 50 hot topics where controversy exist in management of patients with gynecologic malignancy, this book presents expertly argued opinions for and against, incorporating current evidence and clinical trials outcomes. A diverse range of topics are included that pertain to several disciplines in gynecologic oncology, including surgical management of disease, medical oncology, immunotherapy, radiation therapy, as well as screening, preventive and palliative care. This book will be relevant to a diverse audience of practitioners and trainees including gynecologists, gynecological oncologists, surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and general medics. It will be a useful guide for practicing clinicians managing their patients, as well as a concise textbook for trainees and students preparing for examinations and board certifications in gynecologic oncology. Readers will gain an insight into topical controversies, critically evaluating the different sides to enhance their own clinical practice.
Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is the most lethal gynecological disorder due to a lack of effective early detection strategies. Worldwide, approximately 230,000 women are diagnosed annually, whereas 150,000 die. It represents the seventh most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the world with 5-year survival rate of 46%. More than one-fifth of EOC have been related to hereditary conditions. Considerable efforts have been made to implement screening of the general population to diagnose EOC early; nevertheless, this has been ineffective and there is no approved strategy. Nowadays, new approaches for early diagnosis and prevention based on molecular genomics are in development. Whole gen...
We are delighted to present the Frontiers in Oncology "Women in Gynecological Oncology” Volume III series of article collections. At present, less than 30% of researchers worldwide are women. Long-standing biases and gender stereotypes are discouraging girls and women away from science-related fields, and STEM research in particular. Science and gender equality are, however, essential to ensure sustainable development as highlighted by UNESCO. In order to change traditional mindsets, gender equality must be promoted, stereotypes defeated, and girls and women should be encouraged to pursue STEM careers. Therefore, Frontiers in Oncology is proud to offer this platform to promote the work of women scientists, across all fields of Oncology. The work presented here highlights the diversity of research performed across the entire breadth of Oncology research and presents advances in theory, experiment, and methodology with applications to compelling problems.
Ovarian cancer is an umbrella term for a collection of distinct disease entities (histotypes). Until now, the majority of research has focussed on the most common histotype, high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC), which accounts for 70% of cases. The less common histotypes – including endometrioid, clear cell, mucinous, low-grade serous, carcinosarcoma, and non-epithelial histotypes – have received far less research attention. Accordingly, while major advances in our understanding of HGSOC have led to molecularly-directed therapies that improve patient outcomes, progress in less common histotypes has lagged behind. Notably, many of the uncommon histotypes demonstrate resistance to conventional chemotherapy regimens, and their inherent biological differences suggest most are unlikely to respond to emerging molecular therapeutics designed to target the biology of common ovarian cancer types.
The book will present the progress made since the last meeting in fall 2013 concerning the analysis of circulating extra-cellular nucleic acids. There are a modest number of laboratories involved in this field, nevertheless the number of papers published by researchers is extensive. The articles which will be published in this meeting report will be a valuable contribution for researchers and research students alike and will help them to stay on top of the developments in different research areas and to „cross borders“ between them.
Sex steroids, including androgens, estrogens, and progestogens, are known to have widespread physiological actions beyond the reproductive system via binding to the sex hormone receptors. Meanwhile, emerging evidence has indicated that sex hormone receptor signals are involved in the outgrowth of some malignancies, such as prostate and breast carcinomas, as well as others that have not traditionally been considered as endocrine-related neoplasms. This Special Issue “Sex Hormone Receptor Signals in Human Malignancies” covers various aspects of the potential role of sex hormone receptors and related signals in prostate cancer, breast cancer, and other neoplastic conditions by depicting promising findings derived from in vitro and in vivo experiments as well as the analyses of surgical specimens. The current observations described may thus provide a unique insight into novel or known functions of sex hormone receptors and related molecules.
