Ethics In Social Science Research In Indonesia

"There are not many books on ethics that are currently available, especially in Indonesia. This book comes to fill that gap. A commendable book that researchers should read, especially when there is more and more research on human behavior. It is a stupendous work."  M. Chatib Basri, Executive Director, IBER Minister of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia 2013-2014 “This book addresses an important set of issues in the context of Indonesia, a large developing country in Southeast Asia. Most work on research ethics has originated in the developed world; the strength of this book is that it relates the large international literature to the specific problems which Indonesian researchers a...

Ethics in Social Science Research in Indonesia

This textbook presents ethical guidelines for conducting research in the social sciences, focused on Indonesia. As a country with a fast-growing research environment, the real-life cases of ethical issues that arise in Indonesia can teach both aspiring and established researchers how to approach the complexity of research ethics and dilemmas. With technological advancement affecting how research is conducted, the necessary ethical guidelines for research are also evolving. The instantaneous nature of information movement has made confidentiality in research data more critical than before, and any negligence in protecting research participants has an unprecedented scope of damage. The Effect of School Type on Academic Achievement

"Using data from Indonesia, Newhouse and Beegle to evaluate the impact of school type on academic achievement of junior secondary school students (grades 7-9). Students that graduate from public junior secondary schools, controlling for a variety of other characteristics, score 0.15 to 0.3 standard deviations higher on the national exit exam than comparable privately schooled peers. This finding is robust to OLS, fixed-effects, and instrumental variable estimation strategies. Students attending Muslim private schools, including Madrassahs, fare no worse on average than students attending secular private schools. The results provide indirect evidence that higher quality inputs at public junior secondary schools promote higher test scores. "--Cover verso.

Na Willa's days are spent happily in her little house in the alley, until, one day, Pak brings some news that will change her life forever... In this sequel to The Adventures of Na Willa (2019), our heroine Na Willa's days are still filled with excitement and simple joys: playing with her friends, reading new books, and singing along to the radio. And now Pak, her father, is back from sea! Pak takes Na Willa to school, goes for ice cream and paints the house. On the way home, I tell Pak all about my friends Asih, Eko and Endang. I tell him about Joko who speaks only Javanese, Gatot who never finishes his sentences, Sumi who cries every time she doesn't finish her colouring, and Sri who is always laughing at her. By the time I finish all these stories, Pak can't stop laughing. And while he rides, just like Mak, Pak loves to sing and make up his own songs. Mak often sings about the flowers in the garden - the roses and jasmine - but Pak makes up a song all about me and my friends. 'Willa, oh Willa, in her new school she has many friends! There is Gatot, Sumi, Ekoooo, Asih, Endang, Sriiiii, and Jokoooo!' Ahhhh, I love Pak's song.

The Floracrats

Situated along the line that divides the rich ecologies of Asia and Australia, the Indonesian archipelago is a hotbed for scientific exploration, and scientists from around the world have made key discoveries there. But why do the names of Indonesia’s own scientists rarely appear in the annals of scientific history? In The Floracrats Andrew Goss examines the professional lives of Indonesian naturalists and biologists, to show what happens to science when a powerful state becomes its greatest, and indeed only, patron. With only one purse to pay for research, Indonesia’s scientists followed a state agenda focused mainly on exploiting the country’s most valuable natural resources—above ...

When news broke that the CIA had colluded with literary magazines to produce cultural propaganda throughout the Cold War, a debate began that has never been resolved. The story continues to unfold, with the reputations of some of America’s best-loved literary figures—including Peter Matthiessen, George Plimpton, and Richard Wright—tarnished as their work for the intelligence agency has come to light. Finks is a tale of two CIAs, and how they blurred the line between propaganda and literature. One CIA created literary magazines that promoted American and European writers and cultural freedom, while the other toppled governments, using assassination and censorship as political tools. Def...
