Rooftop Societies
A "rooftop society" is based on socio-cultural and political contradictions, the historical rivalry and antagonism between existing components of society. Apart from antagonism between citizens and the state, political power struggles, the rivalry between modernism and traditional forces; the presence of redundant parallel institutions and political power organizations are important characteristics that must be recognized. This book delves into greater detail in assessing the roots and characteristics of Middle Eastern countries, which are called "rooftop societies". Here people, throughout history have been forced to live a paradoxical life, where their true identities remain hidden, out of fear, and they struggle to resist repressive regimes, injustice, exclusion, and human rights abuses.

The Conceptualization of Guardianship in Iranian Intellectual History (1800–1989)
This book is a study of the concept of wilāya and its developments among Shīʿī scholars from the eighteenth to twentieth century. Leila Chamankhah addresses a number of issues by delving into the conceptualizations of wilāya through the examination and interpretation of key texts. She focuses on the influence of ibn ʿArabī’s mysticism, with regard to the conception of wilāya, on his Shīʿa successors and expositors in later centuries. She also discusses the development and transformation of the conception of wilāya over two hundred years, from the esoteric school of Shaykhīsm to the politicization of wilāya in the theory of wilāyat al-faqīh.
Territorial Water Cooperation in the Central Plateau of Iran
This book tries to answer the question how different communities in such an arid area as the Iranian central plateau could have shared their limited water resources in a perfect harmony and peace over the course of history. They invented some indigenous technologies as well as cooperative socio-economic systems in order to better adapt themselves to their harsh environment where the scarce water resources had to be rationed among the different communities as sustainably as possible. Those stories hold some lessons for us on how to adjust our needs to our geographical possibilities while living side by side with other people. This work gives insight into the indigenous adaptation strategies through the territorial water cooperation, and describes how water can appear as a ground for cooperation. It explains the water supply systems and social aspects of water in central Iran. Topics include the territorial water cooperation, qanat’s, the traditional water management and sustainability, the socio-economic context, the sustainable management of shared aquifers system and more.

Reclaiming the Faravahar
"Reclaiming the Faravahar" is the first ethnographic study of contemporary Zoroastrians in Tehran. Examining hundreds of ritual performances, Navid Fozi shows how Zoroastrians define their identity and values in an area long marked by conflict between the Shia and Sunnis. He focuses on two main concerns for Zoroastrians: continuity with the past as evidenced by their claim to be the most authentic Iranians, as well as their attempts to stand apart from the dominant Shia.
