Global Agricultural Workers from the 17th to the 21st Century
Agricultural workers have long been underrepresented in labour history. This volume aims to change this by bringing together a collection of studies on the largest group of the global work force. The contributions cover the period from the early modern to the present – a period when the emergence and consolidation of capitalism has transformed rural areas all over the globe. Three questions have guided the approach and the structure of this volume. First, how and why have peasant families managed to survive under conditions of advancing commercialisation and industrialisation? Second, why have coercive labour relations been so persistent in the agricultural sector and third, what was the role of states in the recruitment of agricultural workers? Dieses Buch widmet sich dem Missionswerk der Gesellschaft Jesu im kolonialen Brasilien von 1549 bis 1760. Das jesuitische Missionsprojekt setzte einerseits mittelalterliche Traditionen christlicher Missionierung seit den Kreuzzügen und der deutschen Slawenmission durch die Bettelorden fort. Andererseits fügte sich die frühmoderne Brasilienmission der Jesuiten in eine lange Reihe globaler «Zivilisierungsprojekte» ähnlicher Art, wie etwa die englische Eroberung Irlands, die spanische Mission in Mexiko oder die portugiesische Präsenz im Kongoreich. Mit dem im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert aufkommenden Barock schufen diese Missionsprojekte die erste weltumspannende Kulturerscheinung in Religion, Kunst, Architektur und Literatur. Im Zeitalter der elektronischen Massenmedien gewinnen die frühmodernen Missionsprojekte einen kaum zu übersehenden Gegenwartsbezug.
The Frontiers of Mission
In exploring the shifting realities of missionary experience during the course of imperialist ventures and the Catholic Reformation, The Frontiers of Mission: Perspectives on Early Modern Missionary Catholicism provides a fresh assessment of the challenges that the Catholic church encountered at the frontiers of mission in the early modern era. Bringing together leading international scholars, the volume tests the assumption that uniformity and co-ordination governed early modern missionary enterprise, and examines the effects of distance and de-centering on a variety of missionaries and religious orders. Its essays focus squarely on the experiences of the missionaries themselves to offer a nuanced consideration of the meaning of ‘missionary Catholicism’, and its evolving relationship with newly discovered cultures and political and ecclesiastical authorities.
Public Theology in the Secular State
This book gives a persuasive answer to the need for public theology today. Rudolf von Sinner can draw from a rich basis of scholarship and experience related to the topic of public theology. His clear awareness of the contextuality of public theology is the reason for his repeated assurance in this book that we cannot speak about "public theology" but always only of "a" public theology. At the same time it is very clear for him that there is also an "intercontextuality". One of the great strengths of this book is its embeddedness into an international discourse on public theology, with a special emphasis on the South-South exchange. The title of this publication suggests a double meaning: on the one hand, most of the contributions outline philosophies of religion relevant for Latin America, without, however, betraying an explicit Latin American perspective. On the other hand, the title refers to a specific form of philosophy that has developed regionally and bears explicit traces of its origins that differentiate it from philosophy in Europe. Knowledge of the Pragmatici
Knowledge of the pragmatici sheds new light on pragmatic normative literature (mainly from the religious sphere), a genre crucial for the formation of normative orders in early modern Ibero-America. Long underrated by legal historical scholarship, these media – manuals for confessors, catechisms, and moral theological literature – selected and localised normative knowledge for the colonial worlds and thus shaped the language of normativity. The eleven chapters of this book explore the circulation and the uses of pragmatic normative texts in the Iberian peninsula, in New Spain, Peru, New Granada and Brazil. The book reveals the functions and intellectual achievements of pragmatic literature, which condensed normative knowledge, drawing on medieval scholarly practices of ‘epitomisation’, and links the genre with early modern legal culture.
