Josephus, the Jewish historian who wrote about history, bible, and serves as a source for a wide-range of related disciplines is the subject of twenty four articles which grew out of an international colloquium.
This is the first English commentary on Josephus’ Against Apion, his apologetic treatise which rebuts Egyptian and Hellenistic slurs on the Judean people. Accompanied by a new translation, the commentary provides full analysis of the historical, literary, and rhetorical features of the treatise, and analyses its engagement with the cultural politics of the ancient world.
"...An exquisite reproduction of an original, circa-1850 printing, the book is a remarkable record of history from Creation to around 100 AD, and the world of the early church. 'Sequel to the History of the Jews' is included -- continuing the historical writings to the mid-19th century"--
As one can guess from the title, 'The Life of Flavius Josephus' is a biography of Flavius Josephus. He was a first-century Romano-Jewish historian and military leader, best known for The Jewish War, who was born in Jerusalem—then part of Roman Judea—to a father of priestly descent and a mother who claimed royal ancestry.
Flavius Josephus was a first-century Romano-Jewish historian, best known for The Jewish War and Antiquities of the Jews. He initially fought against the Romans during the First Jewish–Roman War as head of Jewish forces in Galilee, until surrendering in 67 CE to Roman forces led by Vespasian after the six-week siege of Jotapata. Josephus's works are the chief source next to the Bible for the history and antiquity of ancient Palestine, and provide a significant and independent extra-Biblical account of such figures as Pontius Pilate, Herod the Great, John the Baptist, James the Just, and possibly Jesus of Nazareth. The works of Josephus include useful material for historians about individuals, groups, customs, and geographical places.
