James Alexander Hamilton

James Alexander Hamilton, son of Alexander, influenced U.S. history, advising leaders and supporting abolition, with personal historical insights. Born in the year of the Constitutional Convention, James Alexander Hamilton was uniquely positioned to observe the early republic era and the formation of the experimental United States government. His father, Alexander Hamilton, had been the first US Treasury Secretary, an outspoken and controversial character who was killed in a duel when James was a teenager. With a lifelong devotion to his father's memory, James advised men from Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren to Abraham Lincoln and Salmon P Chase on banking and constitutional matters. Thr...

A New World

Jim Meagher’s world as a young man in the Irish-American neighborhood of Riverdale, New York, in the 1950s was a familiar and comfortable one, defined by family, church, school, and friendship. But was there something more to experience from life that could only be found outside those friendly confines? What if he could be a great man, with power and influence and riches? Life would soon take him beyond Riverdale—far beyond it—and teach him valuable lessons about duty, honor, and responsibility. Along the way, laughter and love would also be companions as Jim Meagher discovered the new world awaiting him beyond Brush Avenue—and also discovered that power and influence and riches are not always what a young man wants or needs.

The Performance of Power

Recently in the field of theatre studies there has been an increasing amount of debate and dissonance regarding the borders of its territory, its methodologies, subject matter, and scholarly perspectives. The nature of this debate could be termed "political" and, in fact, concerns "the performance of power"—the struggle over power relations embedded in texts, methodologies, and the academy itself. This striking new collection of nineteen divergent essays represents this performance of power and the way in which the recent convergence of new critical theories with historical studies has politicized the study of the theatre. Neither play text, performance, nor scholarship and teaching can sa...

Henry James in Contemporary Fiction

Henry James in Contemporary Fiction

This book explores the extraordinary proliferation of novels based on Henry James’s life and works published between 2001 and 2016, the centenary of his death. Part One concentrates on biofictions about James by David Lodge and Colm Tóibín, and those written from the perspective of the key female figures in his life. Part Two explores appropriations of The Portrait of a Lady, The Turn of the Screw, and The Ambassadors. The book articulates the developments in biographical and adaptive writing that enabled millennial writers to engage so explicitly with James, locates the sources of his appeal, and explores the different forms of engagement taken. Layne analyses how these manifestations of James’s legacy might function differently for knowing versus unknowing readers, and how they might perform the role of literary criticism. Overarching themes include ideas of queering, the concern with seeking redress, and the frustrated quest for origin, authenticity, or ‘the real thing’.

In 1913 four Australian teachers attended inspirational educator Dr Maria Montessori’s first international training course in Rome. That same year Blackfriars School in Sydney was one of the first schools in the world to adopt the Montessori approach. A century later, Montessori continues to be at the forefront of innovative education in this country, with 200 schools and centres, including Indigenous learning programs, and a recognised curriculum of its own.
