China's Digital Nationalism

Nationalism, in China as much as elsewhere, is today adopted, filtered, transformed, enhanced, and accelerated through digital networks. And as we have increasingly seen, nationalism in digital spheres interacts in complicated ways with nationalism "on the ground". If we are to understand the social and political complexities of the twenty-first century, we need to ask: what happens to nationalism when it goes digital? In China's Digital Nationalism, Florian Schneider explores the issue by looking at digital China first hand, exploring what search engines, online encyclopedias, websites, hyperlink networks, and social media can tell us about the way that different actors construct and manage...

Kraftwerk (power station) is a group formed in Düsseldorf, North Rhine-Westphalia, West Germany during 1970, by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider. Widely regarded as innovators and pioneers of electronic music, they were among the first successful artists to popularize the genre. The band began as part of the German experimental krautrock scene of the early '70s, before fully embracing electronic instrumentation, including synthesizers, drum machines, and vocoders.

The People?s Republic of China began the 21st century with a new-and-improved public relations approach that was meant to counter anxieties about China?s role in the world while simultaneously showcasing the leadership?s policies to a domestic audience. Crucial to this communication strategy have been networked spectacles: elaborate mass event, designed to reconfigure organisations, ideas, and the relations between people.0In 'Staging China', Florian Schneider analyses large-scale projects like the Beijing Olympics and Shanghai Expo to show how such spectacles became part of the ruling party?s governance toolkit under Hu Jintao?s leadership, and how their legacy informs politics and political communication in China to this day.

Staging China

In this volume Florian Schneider shows how mass media events fit into the political, economic, and cultural developments in China. Through expert interviews and empirical studies of production backgrounds and media contents, Schneider explores the communication strategies that informed the Beijing Olympics, the Shanghai Expo, and the 60th Anniversary of the PRC. The book discusses what the implications but also the limits of these strategies might be, and it shows to what degree different actors take advantage of China's mass media events to shape political discourse. Through an in-depth engagement with theories of mass-communication and cultural governance, "Staging China" explores this vital dimension of political communication in contemporary China, providing a novel take on networked politics and legitimation.

2013 saw the launch of the largest, most influential investment initiative in recent memory: China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). This globe-spanning strategy has reshaped local economies and regionals networks, and it has become a contested subject for scholars and practitioners alike. How should we make sense of the complex interactions that the BRI has enabled? Understanding these processes requires truly global perspectives alongside careful attention to the role that local actors play in giving shape to individual BRI projects. The contributions in this volume provide both 'big picture' assessments of China's role in regional and global interactions and detailed case studies that home in on the role agency plays in BRI dynamics. Written by leading area studies scholars with diverse disciplinary expertise, this book reveals how Chinese efforts to recalibrate the world are taken up, challenged, revamped, and reworked in diverse contexts around the world.
