Consumer organizations and the right to adequate food
Consumers are a powerful force for change towards a sustainably developing world that leaves no one behind and respects the human rights of all. This publication is aimed at making the connections between the important work of consumer organizations and the realization of the right to adequate food, increasing the visibility of these organizations and highlighting their importance to food security, healthy diets and food systems transformations. It is also intended to support consumer organizations in their awareness raising, and capacity development efforts towards even greater impact. In showcasing how the work of consumer organizations contributes towards securing the right to adequate food for all at local, national, regional and global level, it seeks to reinforce their place as vital partners at the policy and decisionmaking table. It is designed as a complement to Consumer Organizations in Action: a growing community of consumer organizations, presenting their experiences in food issues, as well as facilitating networking, and the exchange of knowledge, skills and good practices.

In 2019 and 2020 alone, sub-Saharan Africa was hit by a once-in-a-century desert locust upsurge and the COVID-19 pandemic while simultaneously facing conflict, droughts, and floods among other shocks and stressors. More than 60 percent of the population in sub-Saharan Africa depends on agriculture for food and income. Smallholder farmers, pastoralists, fishers, and foresters are the key change agents in restoring and improving livelihoods in Africa. Stepping up – Everyone around the table for better nutrition and healthy diets
This paper, STEP 3, is the third of three background papers produced to inform the ‘Everyone Around the Table: FAO/GAIN Roundtable with Private Sector on Healthy Diets’ series of virtual roundtables which took place in July 2020. As in STEP 1 and STEP 2, the topics covered are relevant to all regions, but where possible a greater focus has been given to low- and middle-income countries. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are again a focus, given their role in the food systems of these regions (see STEP 1 for more detail), including their common presence in the food environments of many people living in poverty. STEP 3 (this paper) looks more closely at what it means to go to scale with healthy diets and better nutrition, providing examples and reflections for all stakeholders to consider.
Agriculture and climate change
Many national legal frameworks still do not include laws and measures specifically intended to tackle climate change in the agriculture sectors. However, national laws and institutional frameworks are necessary for good governance and can operate to support the implementation of national policy and international commitments, including on climate change. Indeed, Target 16.3 of the Sustainable Development Goals calls for the promotion of the rule of law, and the assurance of equal access to justice for all. This publication presents FAO's work in developing and strengthening indicators that measure food, agriculture and the sustainable use of natural resources, shining a light on the 21 indicators of FAO custodianship. It describes how the organization can support countries in tracking progress and making the connection between monitoring and policymaking to achieve the SDGs.
OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2021–2030
The Agricultural Outlook 2021-2030 is a collaborative effort of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. It brings together the commodity, policy and country expertise of both organisations as well as input from collaborating member countries to provide an annual assessment of the prospects for the coming decade of national, regional and global agricultural commodity markets. The publication consists of 11 Chapters; Chapter 1 covers agricultural and food markets; Chapter 2 provides regional outlooks and the remaining chapters are dedicated to individual commodities.
Data driving development: Achievements and successes from FAO’s Agricultural Integrated Survey (AGRISurvey) programme
The AGRISurvey programme is a country-led initiative aimed at strengthening countries’ agricultural surveys systems and promoting access to agricultural statistics. The programme supports countries in enhancing evidence-based decision making at national level and in monitoring the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicators, particularly those related to agriculture. The AGRISurvey programme was launched in 2017 and ended in 2021. Activities continue under the 50x2030 Initiative to Close the Agricultural Data Gap. This document presents the success stories and lessons learned from the implementation of the programme in countries and accompanies the release of the final project report.
Improving social protection for rural populations in Europe and Central Asia
FAO’s Strategic Framework (2022–2031) envisages the transformation to more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agrifood systems for better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life, leaving no one behind.
