The Scandal of Self-contradiction
Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922-1975) was both a writer and filmmaker deeply rooted in European culture, as well as an intellectual who moved between different traditions, identities and positions. Early on he looked to Africa and Asia for possible alternatives to the hegemony of Western Neocapitalism and Consumerism, and in his hands the Greek and Judeo-Christian Classics morphed into unsettling multistable figures constantly shifting between West and East, North and South, the present and the past, rationality and myth, identity and otherness. The contributions in this volume, which belong to different intellectual and disciplinary fields, are bound together by a fascination for Pasolini's ability to recognize contradictions, to intensify and multiply them, as well as to make them aesthetically and politically productive. What emerges is a "euro-eccentric" and multifaceted Pasolini of great interest for the present.
Gendering Commitment
Notions of engagement, commitment and impegno continue to provoke debate amongst academics researching contemporary Italian culture, and yet – be it by accident or by more conscious selection – critical work has tended to posit these concepts as a predominantly male and, often, heteronormative domain. This collection of essays challenges this assumption, and analyses more closely the fluid and fragmented nature of commitment, and the work of Italian intellectuals and cultural practitioners associated with it. Configurations of Sentential Complementation
The investigation of sentential complementation focuses on properties of sentences that are embedded in other sentences. This book brings together a variety of studies on this topic in the framework of generative grammar. The first part of the book focuses on infinitival complements. The author provides new perspectives on raising and control, longstanding problems in infinitival complementation. He then examines the problem of clitic ordering in infinitives in Romance languages.
